Reminds me of that Mexican Santa Claus movie, featured on MST3K, where the character of Santa was a foreign concept. So the filmmakers had him dealing with Hell's chief demon on Christmas Eve and they put in this dance number.

What's amusing is the word choice. Canonically confirmed. Because as far as I know, the show has mostly depicted either gay or straight relationships. Which...isn't exactly groundbreaking in 2025. I mean, literal children's shows also do that.

But the canonically confirmed bit opens up a lot more ground because Viv likes to pull a Rowling and word of god a lot of extra details. Which to be fair, isn't inherently a bad thing, I think it's cool when a creator keeps engaging with their audience and answers questions and fills in some world building details that otherwise wouldn't fit into a show/book/whatever. But if you try and use it to pander and get representation points, that's not really the same thing.

While I wouldn't personally say Viv is homophobic, she definitely fetishizes hurt gay boi couples. Which if you reduce someone's orientation down to being your personal fetish fuel, it's not a great look. It's like when people complain about a horrible, but hot actress only being in a movie/show because of tits. It's not immoral, but...it ultimately hurts the quality of your work. Well...most of the time, I'd argue there are times where it can potentially work if you're being tongue in cheek or doing a parody or something, although even then, you can't just use that as an excuse to be bad, but that's neither here or there because it very much isn't what Viv is trying to do.

What's funny is making those characters lesbians weren't even Viv's idea. Morgana made Sally May a lesbian because that's essentially her self insert. Mayberry and Martha getting together was also thought up by Morgana. Velvette being a lesbian was suggested by Sam Miller, another lesbian on the team.

And don't get me started on Vaggie. Viv for the longest time was debating on what the character's sexuality was going to be, even saying she was afraid of making Vaggie a lesbian due to the "man-hating lesbian" stereotype. The only reason why Charlie and Vaggie got together was because other people working on the show was shipping them. I wouldn't be surprised if another lesbian wanted Vaggie to be a lesbian.

From the looks of it, Viv doesn't seem to care about having female/female relationships in her shows. I bet if those other people who made those suggestions weren't there, there wouldn't have been any lesbians because Viv rather focus on gay men.
