They don't though. A lot of "collectors" are just scalpers buying from scalpers, either deliberately to drive up prices, or unknowly believing they're getting a deal.If collectors would stop paying extortion prices on ebay, second-hand store/thrift stores would stop trying to compete with it.
My theory is consoomer prestige. That aside I noticed this sort of attitude is more and more common in most hobby communities these days
"Yes I'm an artist and I'm PROUD to say I hardly make art!"
"I'm a gamer and I play all my games on super easy, cinematic mode, aim assist enabled with boss skip!"
"I'm a film critic and I don't even like films, and it's time we normalzied that!"
What the shit is going on? I mean, I'm sure it's largely, at least in part, just posers trying to cement themselves a place in a community they don't belong in, but when did we as a society reach a point where this is not only acceptable but only super common and a point of pride?
There's a quote I've seen attributed to Terry Pratchet.
"To be an author, you have to want to write. Too many people want to 'have written'."
The idea here is that people want the fame, money, and image of being a professional author, with all that writing and storytelling being a barrier to entry.
As for the bolded part. Ever since nerd stuff became popular. They want the cool club of being in nerd space, but without wanting to deal with those ugly nerds stinking up the place.
Except it doesn't. It's underpants gnome logic. It's ragebait. It's done because it works.
