Supposedly it all began when Kayla reached over to kiss April based on Aaron's story, but there is precious little detail between that and when he said the four of them sat down (at some time later) and supposedly Nick and Kayla confessed they had 'more experience with this kind of thing' than they might have let on.

The early days of the polycule is very scant on details.

I just remembered that Aaron actually bought Kayla Star Trek figurines as a gift, and one was a black male character. I’m not sure if we ever figured out if it was Sisko, Geordi, Worf, or Tuvok. Maybe Aaron will tell us in a couple of years.
