A soldier wounded by a knife at the border has died.
The General Command of the Armed Forces announced on Thursday that the soldier wounded by a knife at the border with Belarus has died.
“We regret to inform that on June 6 in the afternoon, at the Military Medical Institute in Warsaw, surrounded by the support of family and fellow soldiers, the soldier of the 1st Armoured Brigade stabbed with a knife has died,” the General Command of the Armed Forces stated on platform X.
“Despite the assistance provided in the area of the bandit attack on the border with Belarus and the efforts of doctors, his life could not be saved,” the Command wrote.
It informed that the relatives of the deceased soldier were provided with support and psychological care, and “additional help, both psychological and organizational, will be continued depending on the family’s wishes.”
The soldier was attacked on May 28 in the morning on a section of the border near Dubicze Cerkiewne (Podlaskie Voivodeship). A private of the 1st Warsaw Armoured Brigade, part of the 18th Mechanized Division, was wounded with a knife by one of the men who, in a group, tried to force through the steel barrier. When the soldier, using a protective shield, was blocking a breach in the steel barrier at the border, the perpetrator – after reaching through the fence – stabbed him in the chest area. The knife remained lodged in the soldier’s body. Branches and stones were thrown at the wounded soldier and the Border Guard officer providing him with assistance.
In the morning, the Minister of National Defence, Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, informed that the soldier had been transported from the hospital in Hajnówka to the Military Medical Institute in Warsaw; the condition of the wounded remained very serious.
