TLDR;

Despite widespread disapproval from constituents, S.J.Res 34 has passed the United States Senate with a vote of 50-48, with two absent votes. Earlier today, at 12:25 Eastern March 23, 2017, the US Senate voted on S.J.Res 34, and will use the Congressional Review Act to strip away broadband privacy protections that kept Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and telecoms from selling your internet history and app data usage to third parties. S.J.Res 34 was first introduced by 23 Republican Senators earlier this month and its blitz approval is a giant blow to privacy rights in the United States.

The resolution, which is now effectively half passed, will hand responsibility of broadband privacy regulation from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and disallow the FCC from making any rules protecting Internet privacy ever again.



So chances are it will also pass the House and become law...

Well, I see no way this could possibly be bad... :S. I mean, if you're perfect according to constantly fluctuating postmodern standards of conduct and never, ever, EVER visit non-PC humor websites... :x

They should only allow this to happen if the ISP owner's history is made public, too.
 
So, what does that mean for those of us who's opinions aren't "PC"? Is some company with SJWs going to mass dox people or something?

Really all this does is return things back to status quo.
 
If the buyer of all the ISPs' data can use all that internet history to come up with superior, personalized search algorithms for porn, maybe it will be a fair tradeoff.
 
Whatever... It's not like Google and Facebook already sell your information. Anybody concerned about privacy uses Adblock Plus to block ads companies would tailor to you from supposed bought internet history anyway, among other extensions.

If this bill allows people/companies to sell and buy internet histories, I suggest that we start a fund to buy the senate's browsing history. I bet they all watch really embarrassing porn.
 
Well, I just finished sending an angry letter to my Representative. I doubt it will do anything, but it made me feel good.
I recommend that you people do the same thing, or demand to see your congresscritter's internet history.

What the fuck are you two talking about? The bill was proposed by Republicans. Every affirmative vote was by Republican Senators.
 
I feel rather meh about this due to how many programs we have that collect our data already. Hell Windows 10 collects data and the majority of users don't care. Just use a anonymous virtual machines and a VPN if it's an issue for you and use Seedboxes to download all your files.

I just don't care at this point because there is so much of it happening who can keep track
Also if anyone ever asks about my views I just admit them so everyone already knows I'm shitty
 
The only real consequence of this will be junk mail. Collating that info into marketing lists for direct marketing purposes has been a drool worthy idea since 4800 baud. Selling those lists will prop up ISP revenue and look like sustainable growth, so put your buys and your shorts in accordingly.

Yeah, I'm the exact same way tbh. I already use uBlock Origin so I'm not affected by ads, and there's not really anything in my internet history that would have consequences for me IRL. Even on here, I've never really said anything that I can't defend when asked about.

I may eventually look into getting a VPN, but that's about it.
 
yeah but we all know theyre all going to puss out at the last minute like they did with the obamacare repeal lol

vpns are still a good idea though
 
TOR is your friend. Granted if you even use it right.

Don't use public wi fi at a starbucks for your purchases either, common sense.
