I prefer Alien, like both, but I lost interest in both of them a while ago
I mostly checked out around AvP movie 1
I didn't even mind it but I had been waiting for it since like, I forget, probably 1993? 4? I think was when "AvP movie SOON" started?
it got made, I saw it in a theater, a facehugger did the matrix thing
that was a fine time for me to stop caring much

Predators was still kinda cool and I think it was supposed to be a swerve that it was a Predator movie

I love the first 3 Alien movies. Then... Eh, Covenant. Covenant I'd rank as being "Like a really good Dark Horse comic adaptation" which isn't an insult if you've read those comics. Prometheus is so flawed that even with all of the numerous fan-edits that I find myself more frustrated every time I watch it. It's a unique experience where I don't exactly hate the movie but the creative decisions that were made infuriate me.

Romulus kind of sucked but I did enjoy the world building it had.

AVP sucked.
Resurrection sucked but did have good gore and Ron Perlman before he succumbed to TDS.
AVP Requiem also sucks but the Alien/Predator scenes are fun. I have a fan-edit that cuts it down to about 35 minutes of just Alien/Predator action and brightens the film by 400% and that's the best way to enjoy it.

The third movie kind of fucked this up by making Ripley want to kill herself, and then doing it. I know Sigourney probably wanted out but it's still a pretty shitty send off for that character, especially with the edition that Newt, Bishop and Hicks all died so her badass efforts in Aliens amounted to nothing.
3 could have been interesting with an all male prison suddenly having to deal with this rapist alien parasite, but it infects a dog and a woman shows up to deal with it anyway. *disappointing trumpet noise*
That's because Aliens 3 was such a cluster-fuck in terms of development and they pasted multiple scripts together. The scripts changed writers like five times and some previous scripts were just scrapped altogether. The other big problem was Sigourney Weaver herself who had some absolutely insane demands she tried to force on the writers. They had to overpay her so much money to drag her back by her ankles, they were basically forced to hear her out. It made it nearly impossible to make the movie entertaining. She demanded some kind of sex scene and at one point even wanted a sex scene with a Xenomorph. She absolutely hated and detested gun violence so she wanted all guns out of the picture and she managed to convince the writers it would make the movie scarier. She really didn't want to do this movie at all and would only do it if she was killed off at the end and was so stubborn that she managed to get many of her crazy demands met. That famous scene of bald headed Weaver being face up close to close with the alien? Yeah that was supposed to be an alien sex scene if she got her way.

Part of me really thinks she wanted to intentionally tank the movie and be so problematic on set they would shitcan the franchise so she could do literally anything else with her life. Part of me doesn't blame her. Aliens is a perfect movie and lightning doesn't strike twice. Although the fact she now has buyers remorse over doing this is hilarious. It doesn't help this also came at a time when it was popular for 3rd movies to just absolutely shit on the two that came before it by ruining characters and their relationships. (Really, Jurassic Park 3? What fucking ass hole wanted Ellie to marry some random jerk off? Was it that hard to just say she was pregnant and unable to go? Was it that hard?!?!?)

It's a bit jarring when she suddenly proposes sex with Charles Dance's character but the theme of self-sacrifice, the competence,
Sigourney Weaver literally refused to come back without this.

If you cut the "Get away from her, you bitch" line, make them actually get singed by acid while flying through the ship, and do what apparently the entire cast said and cut the last 5 minutes of the movie and don't show the Slenderman monster thing, you'd have a somewhat decent movie.

tbh Alien always had a strong sexual component, and although them snogging probably wouldn't work (and makes that The Critic gag a LOT funnier) the quasi sexual tension works at least in theory as a progression of the series

Alien also had an entire cut storyline about the crew all having sex with each other. And Ash was the only one who wasn't interested in hooking up with someone or flirting. Some of the dialog of them alluding to sex acts is still in one of the scenes where they all share a meal together.
AVP sucked.
AvP seems to be the inspiration for practically every Alien movie since then. Fox and Disney really want xenomorphs on Earth now. Everyone shits on Paul Anderson then copies his movie exactly and takes a lot of the plot and some of the characters.
AVP Requiem also sucks but the Alien/Predator scenes are fun.
Requiem has the best Predator in the franchise with Wolf. A Predator doing something other than hunting for sport. Some light world building for the Predators with seeing their homeworld or some other world. Some minor world building for Weyland Yutani. Decent special effects for something with zero budget (despite the worst post production lighting in cinematic history).

I could probably watch AvP and AvP:R more than Prometheus, Covenant, and Resurrection. Though watching AvP:R from the actual bluray or DVD releases is pointless due to the extremely dark lighting.

That sounds like Sigourney. Phenomenal actress but I read an interesting anecdote. So in Alien at the end where Ripley is padding around in those tiny knickers, well James Cameron said in interview that he found that exploitative / beyond acceptable boundaries. Whilst Sigourney Weaver was disappointed she didn't get to do a full on sex scene with the alien that she hoped the scene would be.

Sigourney xenofucker confirmed

My first experience with this series was the Alien Trilogy game. I first played it at a friend's house on ps1, and it was absolutely terrifying for elementary school age me. I didn't even know it was based on the alien movies or that they even existed until I came to the united states. About a year ago, I binged on some YouTube radio dramas and audio books. Might break out the laptop and play the game on emulator.

maybe this was all just a wacky misunderstanding about the idiom "getting head"
Last thing you want to hear when having sex with a xenomorph, is for it to laugh and say "looks like a job for the little mouth."

If the Alien Trilogy game scared young you, we've got a doozy lined up for adult you:

Barely remembered the first, liked the second, didn't really care for the others after. Although the AvP arcade game was pretty fun. Theres so many interesting directions to take the franchise. But all these highly paid famed directors and writers can only keep rehashing final chick/dumb crew deal with alien/aliens getting loose on ship/abandoned colony/city etc etc. 90% of the franchise is essentially the same story. Ripley must have the wildest case of deju vu. Whats really annoying is the humans never really learn or adapt to the Aliens although this could partially be the franchises love of jumping around with prequels and prequels to prequels.

I also firmly reject the franchises core message. Its stupid not to study the Aliens, if for nothing else than self preservation. Burying your head in the sand and waiting for them is whats dumb. Its just that the characters in the movie are so dumb of course whatever they try is going to go wrong.

Oh and hurry up and develop a way to detect stowaways on ships and buildings already. Humanity can invent phasers and FTL travel. Yet a alien stows away on a ship and screws everyone over for the 10 billionth time? C'mon.

iirc Alien setting is mostly lacking in zap rays and explicitly doesn't have FTL
To get super pedantic, they do have FTL drives for traveling between star systems, but it's still slow enough that shipboard travel time is measured in weeks to months or even years, so FTL travelers need to be put into stasis in order to minimize consumption of food, water, air, and energy for life support systems.

And they do have lasers for military applications, although this is never directly referenced in the films. The Nostromo space suits have holstered laser guns which are visible when Kane, Dallas, and Lambert are exploring the Derelict, but the only thing indicating that they are lasers are production notes and sketches.

Of course there are lasers all over the books, comics, and other media.

my mistake
but yeah the other stuff gets zap rays all the time

What in the fuck?
Then... Eh, Covenant.
Covenant is absolutely awful with nothing redeemable in it. Yes Fassbender is a pretty good actor but its all for nothing.

Its like some retard saw Prometheus and instead of taking the good aspects of it(basically up until they drive into the facility) they instead they took the shit half of it(after they drive to the facility) and then went full retard with that. Every single part of Covenant is fucking retarded.

Say what now? The nearest star system to Earth is Alpha Centauri and that's 4.2 light years away. In the movie Lambert says the new journey back to Earth will take "ten months". Even were they coming back from the nearest star that would still be over 4x the speed of light. And fwiw, Zeta 2 Reticuli is over 40 light years from Earth in canon. And technology improves in the timeline. The Prometheus mission which was to a nearby system similarly far away, took two years with cutting edge technology at the time. The Nostromo is a workhorse towing vessel.

They have artificial gravity!

FTL does not mean Star Wars aesthetic.
