in January the cope will probably be that he was then in shock reacting to Ashley's HRO petition or the lead-up to it going on at that time, and in the midst of texts like that reaching out to Nick for a mix of legal advice and consolation on that topic, he felt dejected and resigned to the distinct possibility that Ashley may ultimately succeed in efforts to take the kids away against his wishes, which led to him rationalizing about the silver lining that at least he would still have April to help him pick up the pieces in the aftermath. Taken in that sort of context it's quickly forgettable if not also forgivable, especially considering how he eventually pulled up.
Frankly Aaron's own text admitting to being so very much

The wait must be excruciating.
