The biggest reason is that I think he is simply stuck in his rut. That story of going to the cover band with his mom really showed what his experience solo travelling would be. He'd probably sit in a hotel room on a laptop the entire time too scared to go out and order food, imagine him trying to sit in a restaurant and have a meal alone. Or learn enough Thai to grocery shop at a market.
