The Japanese are weird psychologically - they possess a troubling preoccupation with perversion to a level simply not seen in other nations, to the point where many degenerate fetishes and sexual practices have Japanese names. They also possess a strange aptitude for acts of cruelty. We saw in World War II, where even among the Axis powers, the Japanese stood out for the seeming gratuity of the war crimes committed by their troops. Shall we talk about that suicide forest where they go en masse when they bring shame to famiry? That wouldn't happen in any other country. And of course, anime. Just anime.
Now, hear me out. But I think it has something to do with their diet.
They eat an awful lot of fish in Japan. Fish consumption is Japan is the highest in the world - they eat 81% of the tuna in the sea, and fish far outstrips other forms of meat. Seafood is popular to the degree that they even consume it raw - sushi is a Japanese invention. They eat living sea creatures, sometimes consuming octopus and squid alive. They still go whaling - they say for 'scientific purposes', but come on, we all know.
"But Miriam!" I hear you cry, "Scandinavian people eat fish too and they seem fine!" Yeah, OK. But not the the same level as the Japanese. What's the pollution like in their waters? What are the mercury levels in their oceans like? Do they have a shit ton of unscrupulous (sorry, unscrupurous) mining organisations who just dump their waste runoff in the rivers and seas and don't give a fuck where it ends up? Do they have diseases like Minamata disease, as a direct result of eating fish from polluted water supplies? That even infects their cats? Hello Kitty? More like Goodbye Kitty!
TL;DR - the Japanese are weird demented Innsmouth people who have poisoned their own minds by consuming fish tainted with mercury for generations.
