Keeping up with the general SF timeline is a hobby of mine since I discovered the SF Plot FAQ way back in the 00s, but that only went up to the 3 series at the time. Still, I learned the canon SF4 games (Super and Ultra) were a year after 2, and through putting two-and-two together via when I was logically elected mayor and Mel Masters's age in the 3 series I learned when exactly V slots in between USF4 and SF3 Double Impact. Finally I learned via Mel that SF6 came a decade after Third Strike.
The timeline itself:
1981 - Slammasters 1
1982 - Slammasters 2
1987 - Street Fighter 1, Final Fight 1
1988 - FF Revenge, SF Alpha 2
1989 - FF2, possibly Rival Schools
1990 - SFA3
1991 - FF3
1993 - SF2
1994 - SSF4
1995 - USF4
1997 - SFV
1998 - SF3 Double Impact
1999 - SF3 Third Strike
2009 - SF6
2026 - Captain Commando (!)
2048 - Strider 1
4048 - Strider 2
-The timeline is figured out by Capcom statements then (various official art books) and now (official statements, more art books and fliers) via "X Game takes place X Years after Y Game" and Sakura, Oro's, and Mel's ages. Characters used to get birth years back in the 90s and 00s till Capcom realized that aged the characters, but Sakura was stated to be born in 1974 and 14 in SFA2... and that game's one year after SF1. Whaddyaknow, the year the series debuted. Mel is stated to be born in 1994 in SFV, "3 years old" in the third World Warrior tournament (Double Impact) and Third Strike a year later makes him 4, then SF6 is a decade after when he's 14. Though note he should be 4/5/15 since Capcom stated Double Impact/third tournament was five years after the second (SF2). It's only a year's difference, thankfully. Oro is 140 years old in Double Impact and states he moved to Brazil at 50 years old in 1908.... and the first Japanese moved to Brazil that year, which lines up perfectly with Double Impact/the third tournament in 1998.
-SFA1, SF3 New Generation, and SF4 got replaced in the timeline by SFA2, Double Impact, and Super SF4. SFA3, Third Strike, and USF4 happen a year after those games.
-Various official book and arcade flyer statements: SFA2 is one year after SF1. "Mad Gear Chaos" (the revived Mad Gear of FF2) "fell one year before SFA3". SFA3 is two years after SFA2. FF3 happens one year post-SFA3 (when Shadaloo took a big hit). SF2 is three years after SFA3. SSF4 is one year after the "legendary" second World Warrior Tourney of SF2 according to fliers, and USF4 a year after. SFV logically takes place three years after SSF4. Double Impact is five years after SF2 and Third Strike a year after that. Finally, as noted, Mel is 14 in SF6.... though perhaps 15 if you want it t match the other statements (see two bullet points above). Final Fight Revenge actually sets up a ton of the FF characters' stories for merging into SF and had chaos from Mad Gear's fall as an immediate effect and logically slots between SF1 and SFA2. Slammasters 1 has Haggar at 40 years old and so has to take place six years before his age of 46 in FF1, with it in turn pushed back to the same year as SF1 to account for the characters in SFA2. Slammasters 2 is a year after SM1.
-Metro City is based off of New York City, which had an election year in 1996 so if I'm actually mayor-ing properly it's 1997 when I've been sworn into office. Note too Metro City's Bay Area has the State of Liberty visible from what ought be Jersey City, and my story has MC stated to be 200,000 people... and Jersey City was roughly 400,000 people at the time and also had an election year in '96 so if you want it to exist in conjunction with NYC it's taking up half of Jersey City. It would also give me proper time to campaign in '96, and various easter eggs through the SF series show the Metro City heroes were still very beloved (witness a poster of me, Guy, and Haggar in Cammy's SSF4 stage) well after FF1 and Haggar pardoned me for my obviously set-up crimes. So American politics as they are.... no wonder voters could logically see I was just trying to do the right thing beating Mad Gear up and obviously got framed for it, and voted me in anyways!
-FF characters and Metro City go through one hell of a character arc. FF Revenge sees Sodom wins the wars to become new Mad Gear organizer, Haggar saves Jessica from the chaos and riots, I'm arrested via being framed for Poison's crimes being enough alongside my beatings of goons unprompted, Guy is infected by zombie Belger's corruption and goes to train to become Bushin Master, Rolento's ending doesn't happen yet because El Gado threatened him but Rolento got him back on his side. It leads directly into SF Alpha 2 Guy's, Rolento's, and Sodom's stories and endings - Guy becomes Bushin master, Rolento now besieges Metro City, and Sodom fails to pick up Honda but presumably Retu. Neo Mad Gear dies in FF2 and Sodom and Rolento fall out over it in SFA3 till they kiss and make up. The Skull Cross gang is hinted by Black's SFV file to be a spinoff from the semi-collapse of Shadaloo in SFA3 with his skull insignia and militarism. Finally Guy gets into 4 series via Seth and SIN gun-running weapons into Metro City, then I becomes mayor in SFV and the city's finally at peace and still so by the time of SF6. Finally, note "Japantown" is a place mentioned in FFR Sodom's bio, and presumably where that kabuki stage in the 4 series takes place alongside being an explorable section in Streetwise.
-Capcom seems intent on retconning more of its series into an overall timeline. Looks like Guy's master Zeku is going to form up the Strider Hiryu clan someday and the Captain Commando crew takes place in Metro City, though I bet they'll retcon that year or setting so Ginzu isn't stepping on Guy's toes... And those Fatal Fury Southtown weirdos opened up a branch of the Pao Pao Cafe in Metro City.
