An employee of American fast-food chain KFC was killed in an attack carried out by members of the radical Islamist group Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) during an anti-Israel demonstration in Pakistan’s Punjab province, police said on Tuesday.

The incident took place in Sheikhupura, some 50 kilometers from the capital Lahore.

According to police, a large group of TLP activists stormed the KFC outlet early morning.

While vandalising the restaurant, the attackers opened fire on staff members. One employee, identified as Asif Nawaz and believed to be in his 40s, was fatally shot, while others managed to flee.

“When police reached the spot, the miscreants had fled,” an official said, adding that over three dozen suspects have been detained, and an investigation is ongoing.

Just a day prior, TLP supporters had also targeted a KFC outlet in Rawalpindi, damaging the property.

Similar attacks were reported last week in Karachi and Lahore, where parts of KFC outlets were set on fire. Punjab police have since arrested 17 TLP members linked to those incidents.

The Pakistani government and security agencies appear to be struggling to contain the wave of TLP-led violence against foreign fast-food chains under the guise of religious protests.

How dreadful. Pakistan's stability should be of great concern to the West because they have a few nukes and a lot of different ways to use them, thanks to Chinese help. If Pakistan's government goes under - and it's definitely the most unstable nuclear-armed state - we're all in deep shit.

KFC Turkey operator files for bankruptcy, 537 outlets to close

KFC has closed all of its 537 restaurants in Turkey following the bankruptcy of its local franchisee, İş Gıda A.Ş.. The termination of the franchise agreements with İş Gıda A.S. was initiated by Yum! Brands in January 2025. This move follows a period of declining sales and quality issues, as well as the impact of economic hardship and a boycott of Western brands in Turkey.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:
  • Bankruptcy and Termination:
İş Gıda A.Ş., the franchisee, who owned and operated all KFC and Pizza Hut restaurants in Turkey, declared bankruptcy. Yum! Brands subsequently terminated its franchise agreements with İş Gıda A.S. in January 2025.

    • Reasons for Closure:
The closure was attributed to a combination of factors, including:
        • Poor Performance: Restaurants in Turkey were significantly below the global average sales per restaurant.
        • Economic Issues: Turkey's economic crisis and rising interest rates contributed to İş Gıda's financial strain.
        • Boycott: A nationwide boycott of Western brands, fueled by the ongoing conflict in Gaza, led to a 40% drop in sales for KFC in Turkey.
        • Rapid Expansion: İş Gıda had rapidly expanded its network of KFC and Pizza Hut restaurants, relying heavily on debt, which further exacerbated its financial situation.
    • Impact:
The closure has resulted in the loss of thousands of jobs and the exit of a major fast-food chain from the Turkish market.
    • Legal Action:
Yum! Brands is separately taking legal action pursuant to the terminated franchise agreements, according to Nation's Restaurant News.
