About two decades ago, I attended a lecture by one of the guys who first investigated the cigarette-cancer link. Tobacco leaves are unique because the leaves have the waxy coating on both sides. Normally, you only find this on the underside of the leaf where the stomata are. As a result, when radon in the atmosphere decays to polonium and falls out of solution, it can stick to the leaf. A simple washing process would remove it, but none of the big tobacco companies bothered with it. Fallout settling out of the atmosphere would do the same thing.
