They don't report that way to keep things quick and to minimize details, especially if say 4 people are dead, 1 is injured in a minor way and another is in critical condition. It's easier to just say "6 casualties so far." when info is still coming in than to report the specifics, especially if people who are injured can quickly become people who are dead. It also lets them add more later without issue. In a situation like 9/11 or a natural disaster the number of dead, injured and missing fluctuates so it's easier to just add to the number of casualties than to specify when you're trying to give people the most info possible.
