There are billions of animals on this planet, but everybody always goes back to dogs and cats because they're the most common pets. We all love dogs and cats, dogs and cats are great, but ITT let's talk about our favorite animals that aren't the usual suspects. I'll go first:

Red-wing blackbirds are so stylish, and they're one of the first harbingers of spring along with robins! I like thinking they're wearing all-black uniforms with bright red arm bands.

Pink fairy armadillos are cute as shit and they're SO TINY compared to regular armadillos!! They're the tiniest species of armadillo in fact, which is just fantastic. I want to carry one in a purse like Paris Hilton.

Dumbo octopuses are only one species of the suborder cirrata, which means they have little fingers on their tentacles and their iconic little fins above their mantles that look like ears! There was one a few years ago that looked bashful on camera when a bunch of marine biologists shined a light on it, and they're just fucking adorable.

Barn owls are so mysterious and spooky looking, and part of their mystique are these special feathers in their wings that disperse wind so they can fly super quietly and sneak up on everything!

then as far as animals you can keep as pets, I love rodents and rodent-adjacent pets like guinea pigs and hamsters. Everyone dismisses rodents because rats and mice can be vermin, but rats are highly intelligent and can be trained! Plus, guinea pigs are just the cutest (and loudest) little meat loafs you've ever seen. Them and hamsters both have these little pink paws that look like dainty little gloves, it's just so darling. They don't live very long, and that's honestly the biggest downside, because they're such sweet pets.

So what about you guys? What are your favorite non-cat/non-dog animals?

I don't have any otter facts, I just like em.

I've never seen these little guys before, these are absolutely adorable.

I’ve taken a liking to Eastern Gray Squirrels. It’s a simple pick since they’re common to see across the U.S., but I find the way they stand/sit and hold their arms close to their chest, like in the pic below, to be very cute. When I see them feeding from out my window at and around where I put out nuts, the way they sit there and eat with their paws and also roam for nuts is also quite adorable to look at.

Squirrels are apparently able to catch nuts when thrown to them too:

My mom trained the squirrels in our yard to come up to the door for peanuts, it's the cutest thing. We regularly buy these massive bags of peanuts from the farm store so we can keep them by the door to throw for the squirrels. Squirrels are just like, outside pets. They're adorable as hell, I love watching them chase one another up and down trees.
You ever seen black squirrels? They have them in Grand Haven, Michigan, the squirrels eat black walnuts and their fur turns black! They're actually a variation of the Eastern Gray squirrel, not their own species. It's so cool when you see them, 'cause they look like little shadows darting around.

Chinchilla.
They have an unreal plush toy anatomy. They are friendly and very soft, and on top of everything, they can hold things!

My favorite animal of all time is the green-winged macaw. I got one as a pet a few years back, and while he can be a real piece of work sometimes, I still love him.

They also live for 80 years, which on one hand is good because it means he'll be with me for a long time, but also means he'll probably outlive me.

Skunks are really cute. I would have one as a pet but my cat would destroy that guy within an hour.

I love monkeys and apes in general, i find them fascinating and funny, but the top G for me are mandrils

They are just outright cool looking, is like a fusion of a lion and an ape with a colorful flare to tie everything up nicely, just looking at them comands respect, really beautiful and imposing creatures.

Shimaenaga! It's an easy answer but it's an easy answer,

Emperor/king penguins, I used to be obsessed with Antarctica as a little kid because I always wanted to hug one and I'll die bitter knowing it'll never happen.

Holy shit I used to be absolutely obsessed with KOTSUMET, I don't know how I've forgotten but I gotta catch up on four years worth of youtube otter videos now

Orcas because they are insanely intelligent and sociable with people in the wild as far as animals go.
Every video I've seen of them actively interacting with people in the wild they seem so chill and curious/playful.

Fuck SeaWorld.
