If anyone is still following the lawsuit, things have been moving REEEEEALLY slow, but the latest chapter is Mariel asking for Mike to pay for her attorney's fees in her anti-SLAPP claims (that she didn't prove yet) and Mike's lawyer replying with "fuck you".
1740031430202.png
Looks like the case is finally headed for a jury trial... in 2026. Who knows what else Mariel and Francesca might try to delay.

I don't think Mike would stop for anything other than a massive settlement (considering the whole "everyone is resigning from Lab Zero" stunt put him in millions of dolllars of debt) AND a public apology, confession of guilt. If this actually does go to trial though, it's going to end with one side's career(s) definitively, irreparably ruined.

Either: Mariel/Franny win and get to continue to mutilate the corpse of Skullgirls, Clock Tower, and whatever other myriad of IPs they can get their hands on before Future Club inevitably meets the same fate as Lab Zero. Mike gets blackballed from the gaming industry and is eternally outcast like Vic Mignogna, a victim of vague bullshit allegations scrounging by via obscure projects with no advertising.

or, Mike gets Lab Zero's debts paid off, has definitive legal proof that he was backstabbed and uses the ruling to rebuild his bridges in the professional gaming industry while Future Club meets an early end and Mariel Cartwright never finds work in the gaming industry again (at least as a director) aside from doing social media promo art for Sonic the Hedgehog with Tyson Hesse, her husband.

Fully hoping Mike pulls off a win here.

I wish Mike Z the best and hope he achieves justice against the bloodsucking parasites like Mariel and the rest of the backstabbers. True redemption in 2025 would be him regaining control of the game company, firing the traitors, and removing the censorship that was added later in the game's life cycle. Credit should also be given to the game company behind the 2D fighting game Diesel Legacy: The Brazen Age for giving Mike a second chance to provide his skills in the game development instead of him having the fate of being cancelled forever.

But let's be honest, the characters in the game are unappealing to the eye and look like shit.

I grabbed the Diesel Legacy demo.
Yes, I agree the characters are bleh.
Witch is unfortunate because the game is genuinely fun.
Go try it out, it's free, you'll spend nothing but time to spin it around.

It appears that Hidden Variable has walked/been pushed away from Skullgirls as a result of the litigation. The post here.

IMG_4238.jpeg

As of January 21st, 2025, Hidden Variable is no longer involved in the development of Skullgirls Mobile, 2nd Encore, or other Skullgirls IP-related efforts due to a dispute with Autumn Games which is now the subject of litigation filed in the Los Angeles County Superior Court. In light of that, we hope you understand that - beyond this statement - we will not be commenting further until this dispute is resolved.

All of us at HVS are incredibly proud of the 10+ years we've invested in Skullgirls in all its forms, including creating and supporting Skullgirls Mobile, bringing new characters and platforms to Skullgirls 2nd Encore, supporting the competitive community via the Skullgirls Championship Series, and helping fans new and old fall in love with the IP through the Skullgirls Webtoon and countless other partnerships.

Most of all, we're grateful to have been able to celebrate and support the incomparable Skullgirls community - many of whom we've been fortunate to meet in person over the years at various events.

Thank you all for everything - you deserve nothing but the best.

Turns out Autumn Games (rights-holder of the Skullgirls IP) screwed Hidden Variable (the contractors working on programming part of the mobile game, Future Club collaborates on things like the art) out of $1.22 MILLION dollars and hasn't been paying them what they're owed for the last SIX months, so they filed a lawsuit yesterday: https://trellis.law/doc/240911937/complaint (still looking for the actual case number)
Hidden Variable has announced that as of January 21, 2025, it was "no longer involved in the development on Skullgirls Mobile, 2nd Encore" due to a "dispute with Autumn Games."

In a statement, Hidden Variable said the dispute had now been formally lodged with the Los Angeles County Superior Court.

Court papers intimated Hidden Variables is suing Autumn Games for alleged breach of contract and anticipatory breach of contract, breach of the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing, and for goods and services rendered.

Hidden Variables believes it has satisfied the demands of its contract, but Autumn has not, withholding a $131,500 payment expected in November 2024, then again on November 15, December 1, December 15, January 1, and January 15, as well as around $15,000 in expenses.

$139,000 was also anticipated on February 1 and again on February 15, March 1, and March 15, 2025.

Hidden Variables is now suing for the $1,227,308.98 it says it is owed, as well as interest.

HVS said it gave Autumn Games until January 21, 2025, to settle its payments. When the payments did not come, however, Hidden Variables "provided Autumn with all of the account login information required to continue providing community support for the game [...] so as not to cause damage to the game."

"All of us at HVS are incredibly proud of the 10+ years we’ve invested in Skullgirls in all its forms, including creating and supporting Skullgirls Mobile, bringing new characters and platforms to Skullgirls 2nd Encore, supporting the competitive community via the Skullgirls Championship Series, and helping fans new and old fall in love with the IP through the Skullgirls Webtoon and countless other partnerships," the statement said.

"Most of all, we’re grateful to have been able to celebrate and support the incomparable Skullgirls community - many of whom we’ve been fortunate to meet in person over the years at various events."

The team then said it would not be able to comment further on the matter until the dispute was resolved.

In response, Autumn Games' Jason Donnell said: "First and foremost, I want to acknowledge the concerns surrounding recent announcements. Skullgirls has always been more than just a game - it's a passion project, a living work of art, and a world shaped by the love of its creators and players alike."

After thanking players for supporting the game, the statement acknowledged Autumn Games had "not been delivering on our promise to" fans, which is "why we are making changes now."

"We are not a massive corporation stepping in to take over; we are game developers, storytellers, and passionate fans, just like you," Autumn Games added.

Although the statement made no explicit mention of Hidden Variables, Autumn's statement did confirm it would be launching Guilds later this year, saying the feature was "now actually in development since [Autumn] have taken over in the last few months."

Autumn Games/the Skullgirls Team posted a response:

Truly a cursed game.

But meanwhile, despite the corporate turmoil behind the scenes, Future Club has announced their first new title: "Part-Time Hero: I'm Broke But I have To Save The World!"
1741327022812.png
And of course...
1741327459451.png
It's a subversive visual novel (easy to develop) about millennial job-hunting woes (extremely overdone premise) with a card gimmick (easy to implement).

A complete mismash of other indie game concepts that have been done before: Going Under, Monster Prom, etc. Very innovative!

I haven't followed this game/drama since the beginning so could you remind us if we should be sympathetic to Hidden Variable or is this a case of [joker]"you get what you fucking deserve"[/joker] and [norm macdonald]everyone involved in this story should die[/norm]?

Just a reminder that they fucked over Mike Z:

Within a day of the series of resignations, Hidden Variable Studios and Autumn Games severed their ties with Mike Zaimont and Lab Zero Games in a joint statement.[60] In the statement, both parties expressed intent to work with the employees who resigned from Lab Zero Games on the continued development of Skullgirls.[60]

Although Hidden Variable has worked on Skullgirls Mobile since 2015, we are a 100% independent studio from Lab Zero Games. Our formal relationship is with Autumn Games, who are the official IP holders for Skullgirls.

While Mike never worked for Hidden Variable or Autumn, his behavior nonetheless directly contradicts our shared core values of mutual respect, decency, and professionalism. Everyone has the right to work in a safe environment, and we were disheartened to hear that this was not always the case at Lab Zero.

To answer my question in the previous post, everyone involved with Skullgirls who isn't Mike Z/Lab Zero need to die.

What about the lead artist Alex Ahad? I haven't seen a straight answer on what his role was/is in all the Skullgirls shit. Did he point the finger of shame at Mike Z too? Did he fuck off after Indivisible was done? Or did he stick around and kept his mouth shut so they wouldn't come after him too?

Unfortunately, all we've got are fragments of information. Alex Ahad is generally pretty tight-lipped on social media, mostly posting about his own art and rarely engaging with anything beyond nerd stuff. He never made any public remarks about Mike Z or anybody else at Lab Zero. However, we do know by his own admission that he was fired from Lab Zero in December 2018, almost a year before Indivisible was released in October 2019.

Scuttlebutt says that Alex Ahad wasn't that much of a proactive "team player" according to the other Lab Zero devs, as in that he wasn't as focused on working on Indivisible as much as the others were during development. He actually sued for wrongful termination and walked away with an undisclosed settlement, which was brought up as a sidebar when everyone was ditching Lab Zero in Summer 2020 after Mike Z got into all that hot water. Alex Ahad hasn't been involved - or even inserted himself for that matter - into any of the drama that has since unfolded. He still posts some Skullgirls art on his social media accounts, but there's no real consistent "side" of the issue that he's taken any part of. Sounds like he's content to just stay away from all the troubles ever since they broke out.

Tough break for Alex Ahad, though, since Indivisible was undeniably a personal passion project of his (which makes the "not a team player" thing highly doubtful to me personally). Back during the game's crowdfunding campaign, he had an entire lore stream where he went into extensive detail on the game's lore, characters, concepts, and cultural parallels. By his own admission, Ahad is half-Burmese and half-Filipino, and this game was in a certain way a means for him to give tribute to his family's culture by making an action RPG that incorporated cultural influences from across Southeast Asia, as well as other world cultures based on all the different characters encountered in the game.

But if your team of developers spend most of their time on art and animation, then there's no wonder why everything in the game felt so unfinished and haphazardly published. I suppose you shouldn't have someone who draws well but can't write stories (Mariel Cartwright) serve as your creative director and head of story, then also hire a webcomic writer (Brandon Sheffield) to give the characters (who are supposed to actually flesh out your world and it's complex lore) dialogue that wouldn't be out of place in a low-tier dubbed anime (literally almost the entire cast is a who's who of better-known English-speaking VAs from the last decade or so, and Michael Dorn for some reason).

If Ahad got fired over indivisible it's because he was fighting them about how they were fucking it up.
I bought the game, and I'll say it had potential but the truth is it's just not good.
The best move he's made is not saying much of anything at all so far.
I'm willing to bet he'll have much to say when it's all over.

Just when you think Skullgirls' curse is dead, it claims another victim. Eventually everyone involved in that game is going to be destitute

Then some other studio picks it up and starts the cycle again

Everyone except Mariel Cartwright who's married to Tyson Hesse (the ascended Sonic fan success story) and is unfortunately good at animating. She'll keep going as long as those facts remain.

Minor good news everyone, Future Club's first game "Part-Time Hero" failed to meet its Kickstarter fundraising goal!

and in an ironic twist, "Miss Monster", a new monster taming indie game that hired Alex Ahad as their lead character designer, surpassed its funding goal by 6x.

Turns out people are less likely to support you after spending the last 5 years antagonizing your fans and ousting the people who made your games great!

LoLz.
I'll admit I still enjoy SG but they'll never get anymore money from me.
The news about Alex's next game might make it is good.
I wish Diesel Legacy (the game Mike Z. Worked on) got a better reception.
I bought the game and really like it.

Good to hear that Alex Ahad and Mike Z (via Diesel Legacy) are still working and doing their stuff. Good to hear also that Future Club's kickstarter failed.

In an alternative universe, Ahad's Indivisible would be given a chance to shine and Sweet Baby Inc's Tales of Kenzera: ZAU (Indivisible but Black) would remain an aborted fetus.

After playing the prototype demo of Indivisible, seeing what a piece of shit the final version was pissed me right off. All the potential of the prototype was thrown away for boring pap.
