I don't think he can even register as a 501 because his operation would then need to draft a mission statement, policy guideline, procedures etc specific to animal rescue. Then he'd need to register a treasury account and show accounting for said policies towards stipulated endgoals typical of animal rescue shelters. a)You only get the tag once you pass 12 months without an update, meaning Maldy could ignore it for ages without issue after he pushed previous updates

b)Steam doesn't actually require the updates to be stable, or have any quality requirements at all for the patch, as evidenced by the shit they regularly allow to be pushed on their store.

c)Even if they did, they didn't set the 1st of the month, Maldy did. He could have just as easily gone for 2 monthly, or quarterly, or literally not announced a target at all and gone for the "it'll be out when it's ready" approach that so many studios do.

Using the term Gray hat to reffer to himself is like trying to have his cake and eat it too. A nebulous term where you basically admit to breaking the law but you also report it sometimes, sometimes not, even though you had no business exploiting vulnerabilities in the first place. For example if you're working for a company you are a white hat as you detect a vulnerability then make a full report and fix it, black hats might not work for the company, or do, but maliciously use it.
