We went to check out my friend's place on Saturday. The entire neighborhood is just ash. We were there for less than 15 minutes and my throat was toast. The gorgeous, stately oaks were charred and denuded. A squirrel we rescued over 20 years ago used to love those trees. So did I. A block west of it is where someone we knew years ago died. He was 75 and immobile. We don't know the circumstances surrounding his death yet. Around the corner, a house I lived in 20 yrs ago was gone except for the front facade. The rest of the house, the back house and all the beautiful mature cacti were gone.

The community is starting to feel the fatigue, frustration and reality of the difficulty (improbability imo) of rebuilding. It's sad because of all the towns I have lived in, this one was uniquely special. It's the energy that a place has. Same energy I felt in Hawaii in 1984 the first time I went and the same energy the eastern Sierra Nevada has for me. I'm so sad.

The rain was a wet blanket, enough to dirty car windows and patio tables.

Cool. The entire thing got memoryholed, just as I thought.
been reflecting on this a bit, its not memoryholed so much as we as a society has allowed ourselves to become so traumatized without any time to "mourn" so to speak since 9/11. That was the last time our country came together and truly mourned a tragedy and weather we realize it or not we all very much regret what we allowed ourselves to be ok with in that grief.

The powers that be used that time and that political capitol liberally and in ways I think many internalized without realizing. We started to feel like if we let ourselves be taken that low again who knows what they will do. Its a symptom of the most prideful nation in recorded history with ego to match

"What disaster? you mean that little tiff in California or that soggy business in the Carolinas? blips on the map my friend, mere stains on the fabric of history nothing of consequence to the greatest nation of all time! We dident lose Korea, Vietnam, Iraq 1 or 2, Syria, and Afghanistan, some were close draws but America dosent lose! We sometimes simply fail to win, thats all that happened in that thing you though happened in California. Whats most important is we have the best most Advanced economy in the whole world and thats why we get the be the sole world hegemony and always will be, nothing can ever compete with us and our greatness, and dont you dare insinuate otherwise, not because it will make me mad but it will scare me and Ill lash out in a faux rage but the reality is that your disrupting this very very weak worldview that might have been true at one time but is just a few bad rolls of the cosmic bones away from the whole applecart coming apart so to speak and that is what I have to doomscroll everynight to hide from, that those thoughts might creep in and have a resting place if im not constantly stimulated and distracted by some dopamine giving activity as opposed to the horid and dauting task of rebuilding a curmbling society from the group up with worn out tools and while being mocked and derited by everyone wwe stepped on, on our path to this great heigh from witch we now stand posied to tumble. How significant do you think those fires can really be if the smoke isent even view, and even then its not like its MY house on fire right? RIGHT? Wont someone please dear god just anyone, tell me its all going to be alright even if its a lie?"

On the world stage we are just a really obnoxious 20 somthing year old who beat his old mans high school football record and his dad was already the state champion so we got more praise and love in our youth than most will get in a lifetime, some of it deserved and much not. That former "superstar" is now pushing 30 and the people around him are waiting for him to top the exploits of his younger days beacuse based on his much flauted potential, but the relization is setting in that unless he locks the fuck in RIGHT NOW all he will ever be was the guy who peaked in high school and then became a sad loser like his dad.

Its a big ask, I read an exerpt about Napoleon who was alleged to have said the greatest skill of any commander in the field is to simply know when all the forces of battle hang in the balance, when both sides are at their limit and exahustion hovers like an omen, the commander that can identify such a moment and find a hidden reserve of strength and purpose will ALWAYS be the winner.

That moment for us is right the fuck now and decide that america wasent some seed that sprouted to fast or to quickly and now will wither from its abmition, America was cast in cold rolleded steel and is more than up to any task its people are willing to dillegntly work at no matter the obstacles and I think a big part of that is remebering despair isent an option and that Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice he send forth a tiny ripple of hope and I think small things like documenting the facts of a very real disaster on a fourm Ive seen survive more than most despite its silly origins is very much a tiny ripple of hope.

Every word of our discussion on every page and even every shitpost is a total rejection of the concept of "memoryholing" it may not be looked at by many but in 5000 years the historians and archeoligists will not say "there is no record of this" they will say

"the record keeper of the early 21st century had marvelous and unique senses of humor, we belive they were likely selected for such qualites as they seem to be highley diserning of themselves as displayed by their repeated behavior to "bully" out substandard record keepers within their ranks. They even included a pictographic ranking system showing their far thinking when doing their noble work, by using pictographs instead of written word to rank their records they ensured any inteelligent species could make sense of their contempary views, a ingenius and invaluable reasource as much history is recorded without our knowing of the writers and their peers own thoughts on the matter."

Qrd on how all this water just appeared?
As I understand it, they turned a valve so that instead of pumping water directly into the ocean because of a protected newt or something, they pumped the water to where it was useful.

In other words, Trump bitch slapped them for being retarded.

Jesus. Let's hope that makes the smug ones feel dumb atleast. Doubt it but one can hope.

Jeeze it's really bad being an insurer in California. How do they plan to prevent insurance companies from leaving?
It won't be long until they set up a shell company to take over all the contracts they are forbidden from cancelling and getting the heck out of dodge.

How do they plan to prevent insurance companies from leaving?
They don't. The problem they're facing is that the strongest threat they can make against a business, denying them permission to operate in a state, is exactly what these companies want at this point. Can't threaten them with a good time. And they can't try and hold profits over their heads, because there's none to be had.
