Bogota — Cocaine "is no worse than whiskey" and is only illegal because it comes from Latin America, said Colombian President Gustavo Petro during a live broadcast of a government meeting.

Colombia is the world's biggest cocaine producer and exporter, mainly to the United States and Europe, and has spent decades fighting against drug trafficking.

During a six-hour ministerial meeting -- broadcast live for the first time ever -- the leftist president said "cocaine is illegal because it is made in Latin America, not because it is worse than whiskey."

"Scientists have analyzed this. Cocaine is no worse than whiskey," he added, suggesting that the global cocaine industry could be "easily dismantled" if the drug were legalized worldwide.

"If you want peace, you have to dismantle the business (of drug trafficking)," he said. "It could easily be dismantled if they legalize cocaine in the world. It would be sold like wine."

Petro also pointed out that fentanyl "is killing Americans and it is not made in Colombia," referring to the opioid responsible for around 75,000 deaths in the United States each year, according to official data.

"Fentanyl was created as a pharmacy drug by North American multinationals" and those who consumed it "became addicted," he added.

Since coming to power in 2022, Petro has attempted to make peace with all the armed groups that are fueled by drug trafficking, in the hope of ending six decades of conflict.

Cocaine production in Colombia reached a record-high in 2023, jumping 53 percent to 2,600 tons, according to the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime.

Most coke is cut with heartworm medication for dogs. It's cut on the way to the customers door. There's no such thing as real fish scale in the USA. Not like we need more drugs flooding the country, anyway.

Cocaine used to be legal.

It didn't sell like wine.

It sold like Coca-Cola, cough drops and coffee, combined.

Because it was in all of them.

That's why we stopped.

Nothing about the apparent temperate ability of the populace today encourages me the result won't be even worse this time around if it were tried.

I can't believe the president of Columbia was Nick Rekieta under a pseudonym this entire time

The simple answer is that the government would never promote an upper. Many issues in western countries would be solved if 20-40 year olds would get high on coke and decide that the world could be a better place.
It would make them feel like they could solve any problems in the world, but the only problem they'd want to solve is how to get more cocaine, to paraphrase Robin Williams.

Some energy drinks seem more dangerous than coca tea.
Don't fuck with caffeine. If you handle it in in pure form you need some heavy duty PPE because if it gets anywhere near your skin you're getting an instant heart attack.

Indeed, Nick Reketia's productivity as a lolcow has gone through the roof ever since he started hitting that Colombian marching powder.

As a certain musician once said... cocaine is a hell of a drug.

That said, I have no interest in cocaine and think it should be banned, but raw leaf? I can't see why not, in age where Panera Bread sold heart attack iced teas. Some energy drinks seem more dangerous than coca tea.
"Hello yes I would like to buy twelve tons of raw coca leaf for my raw coca leaf tea manufacturing business, located at the abandoned auto parts warehouse on the edge of town. Yes, entirely legitimate coca leaf tea manufacturing is all that is done there."

One time a dude bragged to me about selling an entire brick of dewormer as coke with zero actual coke in it.

I can't stand cokeheads. They are by far the most annoying kind of drug addicts. They're annoying at parties. They're annoying to be friends with. They're annoying to be around period. Their brains can't comprehend the idea of someone having no interest in it and they will hound you relentlessly to do it with them. They're always tense and antsy and just constantly have this intense angry vibe to them. I've stopped hanging out with a lot of people over the years because of their retarded coke habits. Watched a few of them descend into crack wraithdom.

I still remember this one dude I met at a buddy's place one time. Dude was this kinda dorky metalhead dude who was showing off his gameboy flask. I remember how he was talking about how he just started doing coke a month ago and he was up to an 8 ball a week. I stopped hanging out with all those people around that time but a few years later I was sitting on the bus and this skinny cracked out looking dude sat down across from me. I didn't recognize him at first but it was the metalhead dude. He was skinny as a skeleton, covered in sores and scratching at himself and shit. He didn't recognize me at all. It was sad to see. Dude seemed like a pretty chill happy go lucky kinda guy when I first met him but that shit just destroyed him.

I know someone else who completely fucked up what could have been a multimillion dollar business, lost her daughter, her home, and even her dogs died because she just couldn't stop doing coke and would just continuously waste any and all money on it and that's not even the only chick I've met who lost her kid and family because of that shit.

That was speed! It makes Finnish man go remove commie.

Maybe I know some people who have been cokeheads who have cleaned up and made something of themselves, but everyone I can think of off the top of my head who has been into coke has turned into a fucking psycho, and sometimes the fallout has taken decades to really resolve.

Powerlevels:

I know a dude who was a cokehead in the 90s. He's allegedly been off the coke for 20+ years, but two or three years ago he was arrested for breaking into a wastewater treatment plant in the middle of the night.

Another dude was on crack for a couple years and now he's a garden variety schizo who can't stay housed because once a year he'll smash all the windows in the house, or shit like that.

Third dude was actually kind of a hardcore GOP up-and-comer and that got derailed when he got into a fight with his coked-out girlfriend and now he has a conviction for domestic violence.

Fourth dude was dating my friend and he did coke and decided to slit his wrists and the house looked like a murder scene. He got put away on a 72-hour hold.

This chick I know who started using didn't have too many problems herself but her boyfriend who was also using stole her car and blew his brains out in it.

Shit, last night my friend and I were talking about Rackets and how 5 years ago he was kinda hot and now he looks like Faces of Meth.

In summary, I'm sure I know tons of people who have taken the occasional toot and lived to tell the tale, but the fact that every person I know who has been a serious user has seen their life totally derail to the point where they're not allowed to own a gun makes me think that legalization of anything beyond coca tea would be a massive mistake.

A lot of my close friends at a few points were coke heads. At one point I became one too for one summer, until I got the fuck away from it and suffered for 4 months of letting my brain reconfigure.

I'd understand of taking a bump on new years or one's birthday. Hell, even a gram for that one day is whatever, but the shit is not for regular daily use. I don't care who says what, every person who uses it daily becomes an asshole and eventually wrecks their life.

This shit has zero business being legal and easily available.

Cocaine does direct damage to the cardiac (heart) tissue, literally. This is why eventually cocaine will kill you, it causes irreversible cardiomyopathy that is cumulative and directly proportional to the dose.

There is literally no dose or frequency of use of cocaine that will not lead to direct cardiac damage.

One thing I've noticed about people I know who've done it regularly, long term and then stop is that they don't really go back to the way they were before. They never really fully lose that tense antsy way of being. It's noticeable especially in the older 80's cokehead generation. You can almost always tell when someone that age used to do too much coke.

I've never really had much interest in stimulants. I don't really have any need for any stronger than caffeine. I don't even really like the feeling I get after drinking too much coffee. The idea of doing a drug where that's pretty much the primary effect is sort of unappealing to me. I never really had a problem drinking and staying up all night. I didn't coke to help with that.

I agree and if there's one positive thing I can say about all the fentynyl shit is that it really seemed to abruptly put a stop to the pro cocaine culture that was literally everywhere during the mid-late 2010s. I remember a buddy of mine convinced me to watch the third Harold and Kumar movie. I didn't really like the first two very much but the third one is just all about cocaine and how great it is. There was tons of music glorifying it. TV and movies seemed to normalize and glorify it. It just seemed to be everywhere all of a sudden.

After they legalized weed up here in Canada the very next year all the weed activists suddenly were all about legalizing coke. Because, they're all a bunch of cokeheads associated with the Hell's Angels. The first 420 event they held in Vancouver after it was legalized was fucking massive. There were thousands of people, a lot of families and shit because it was legal now, Cypress Hill was there and then there's all these fucking weed activists up there babbling on TV and in front of everyone about how great cocaine is and how it should be legal. It was like they were just waiting for weed to be legal so they could start pushing that shit.

But, once a bunch of people started dying from fentynyl tainted coke suddenly it all just disappeared and everyone that didn't die or fuck up their lives quit and just acted like they hadn't spent the last 5 years on drugs.

I feel like they fucked up with my generation teaching us about drugs. They made us terrified of needles but totally cool with shoving shit up our nose.

I don't see the issue with the leaves themselves, I didn't even know you could make them into tea, but I do knew you can chew the leaves and that gives you a small boost.
