Alyx was not only useful, but often killed enemies too and shot enemies and unless you literally tried to kill her, she'd always kill enemies and get you to wherever you were going.
Alyx is an invincible NPC. Her regeneration rate is insanely high, it's extremely difficult to get her killed if you do not plan it on purpose. I am not discussing the fact that Valve was essentially less retarded than most 2000-era developers (it's a fact). I fail to see how this interacts with how she's written and her role in the plot. "She's not the team from Daikatana, so she's good!" what kind of counterpoint is that? Who's even discussing Valve's gameplay design?
You dumb gorilla nigger, you don't even know what you don't know.
Also, it's not like HL2 didn't give us endearing NPCs that shared Alyx's invicibility. For example, the sadly one-off Father Grigori.
I like Alyx and think she works for these reasons:
1. She gets scared
2. Her relationship with her father makes her motives understandable. He is a good man, they only really have one another now.
3. She's the daughter of two scientists and Dr Kleiner's honorary niece, it's no surprise that she's good with technology;
4. Her stilted flirting with Gordon is really quite cute and endearing because it's awkward and innocent, and only sprinkled in the game;
5. She shows genuine fear when facing up to the Hunters after the Vorts save her from dying;
6. It makes sense that she's an action-girl because she's spent almost her whole life figuring the Combine. It's like all the French women who were part of La Résistance in WW2
7. She has her moments, but never takes the spotlight away from Gordon (the player).
8. Her skin colour plays zero part in her character story, this is an example of good videogame character writing which you don't see in current year. It's never mentioned:
9. She is lithe and small, she is a woman, it makes sense that she is acrobatic and can get into places a bulkier man could not.
10. She's pleasant to look at, excellent waifu material. I hope HL3 ends with her and Gordon raising a brood of absolute Gigachads and Gigastacies while the Cuckbine seethe and cope from their gay universe.
Speaking of Alyx, the "heart-to-heart" conversation with Gman confirms some interesting details. The Gman knew of and interacted with Alyx long before the events of HLA. He mentions "naysayers" he cannot quell objecting to removing Alyx as a pawn from Black Mesa, as an image of Breen flashes on the monitor screen before Gordon. The Gman himself sitting at Breen's desk.
In HL2, Breen is not only aware of Gordon's "employer", but acknowledges that Gordon's "contract" was open to the highest bidder... Eli also seems to know about Gman. In HLA we see Alyx prove her worth as an "investment" to Gman when she saves him, and she gets shanghaied by him. I really like the f*cked up seemingly meta time travel plot Half Life has now. For the first real narrative boomer shooter HL has an incredibly interesting story.
More importantly, a mean motherfucking servant of God. Compassionately delivering salvation to his congregation, one shell at a time (yeah I know it actually takes .357 for whatever reason).
Who cares what her personality was if she was acutally useful instead of the usual NPC of the time that made it nearly impossible to finish a mission by incessantly trying to get killed?
Alyx was a really useful NPC throughout the entire game. Plus you're dumb.
Not really. Alyx is just there to move the plot along. It's why (at least base game HL2) tries to pigeonhole her out of the way as often as possible, because she folds like a chink with fancy paper if she's allowed to be in a heavy firefight on her own. I think even Barney last marginally longer by comparison. You're still expected to do the bulk of the fighting even while she's at your side.
Yeah, case in point, THAT room is literally the only time she's allowed to act semi-organically in a semi-open fight (where she's not just cubbyholed out of the way for the sake of gameplay convenience), and if you let her try to do the bulk of the fighting, she dies VERY quickly.

For sure, I guess that particular room didn't get as much testing because any scrutiny would show that its a horrible idea to have like 2 shotgunners in a confined space with Alyx. It also says something about shotgunners that they can kill her that quickly even with her lightning speed health regen.
Do you really remember NPCs at the time? Because it was usually you'd have to babysit them to keep them from literally committing suicide via retardation. Just not having to babysit an NPC like it was some gay escort mission was a huge improvement.
From reading this thread, I assume you all think Barney is a better waifu then Alyx? I will agree he is funnier and probably tighter if you're into butt stuff
