I'm not sure it's necessarily that (at least not in all cases). I've seen it mostly used as a cheat code by the terminally dull and unremarkable to get instant "not like other boys/girls" cred. There's no follow-up required: you don't have to do anything or look/act a certain way to be non-binary. You just say the magic words - "I identify as non-binary" - and boom, all of a sudden you're no longer just another tedious, unemployed shut-in; you're a member of the magical and esteemed LGBT Community. It's basically the same thing as people who pick up trash for 5 minutes one day and then go on to put 'environmental volunteer' on their CVs for the rest of their lives, or the people who self-diagnose with PTSD because their parents told them "no" once.I believe it to be some form of bipolar disorder that they manifest as a gender.
The other thing to consider is that I imagine a large majority of 'non-binaries' are young, white and liberal (and thus buy into the notions of IDPol and the oppression hierarchy). Becoming 'non-binary' is a quick and effort-free way to immediately elevate themselves up the stack from the very bottom by glomming on to the LGBT cult, but in such a way that doesn't require any subsequent effort (aside from updating their Twitter bio).
