Funny, I know someone who likes to read romance/smut stuff and claims to skip all the sex stuff to "read only for the plot"


Anyways, a (different) friend is travelling in South Korea right now and told me about something that I thought would fit the thread:

The Kukje Electronics Center
(Just a random vid on the place, didn't want to accidentally dox my friend if I sent his pictures)
It's a large multi-story building but the floor of interest is dedicated to "characters": basically all stuff considered nerdy/otaku (anime, games, VTubers, etc.)

Of course, certain sections of the floor are just straight wall-to-wall anime figure showcases (shown in the video) along with gacha machines everywhere (also wall-to-wall, in some parts so many that friend said it actually got warm from the emitted light)

Most of the gachas were overpriced (in his opinion), roughly equivalent to $3-$5 for gacha/tiny trinkets the size of a finger, and some of the plushes/figures reached into the equivalent of $70-$100 and greater! I'd say the East can definitely outdo the West when it comes to CONSOOMING

Not shown in the video, but what surprised my friend was seeing that it was majority women (roughly 65/35) there both times he went and it was mostly "normal-looking" people, i.e. most people looked like functioning members of society and not the stereotypical ugly shut-in

This is a observation probably as old as Christmas, but I'm already getting bothered by the amount of crap that's on the shelves to be sold as presents that's just..... crap. It's one thing to be an elementary school teacher, or hosting a staff party, and so you go to dollar tree and buy super cheap Christmas decorations that are going in the trash in two days. I get why there's a need. And same for super cheap candy, etc. I'm not saying everything needs to be artisian quality, handmade and blessed by grandmas.

But it's like.... decorative polyester hand towels with pompoms on them. Shiny, impractical measuring cup sets. Mini brand advent calenders: plastic with extra plastic. Can children even really play with minibrands? The only fun part is collecting them and mimicking "surprise egg" style YouTube videos, I'm pretty sure. It's just soulless. Not to mention all the presents FOR MANLY MALE MEN that revolve around alcohol, sportball, and golf.

And yes, it came up before. This woman has a husband and a fat lesbian girlfriend at the same time, or at least she did 2 months ago. Don't know if the girlfriend moving in means the husband is leaving.

I have always hated that around the holidays. I try to drop hints to not get me anything unless it's

1) a truly unique one of a kind find at a thrift/antique store
2) a book
3) baked goods

Otherwise it just feels like useless clutter that I have to keep so I don't feel guilty for throwing it away. Worry that it makes me sound like a elitist ass that's too good for their presents when it's really just nit wanting to accumulate more stuff.
 
I have to admit having my Zelda Secret Sound voicemail notification go off at the gynecologist office was kind of embarassing.

The latest consooming craze seems to be looksmaxing, and one of the types is sporty/fitness look. I see it mainly with girls buying a full set of local sports team gear and they don’t follow the sport. It’s even more ridiculous in Asia where you get girls buying a full suit of something like the Cleveland fucking Guardians and not even knowing they’re a baseball team or where the hell Cleveland is (let alone it being a rusted out shithole). It’s just that anything with an American sports team is seen as cool in Asia.

The EV shit continues to plague California as people continue to hate Musk while buying Teslas and going into debt to buy solar panels and batteries. No, it’s not to save electricity. You don’t even get net metering now. It’s just a stupid trend to look cool. It’s why people are buying Teslas and Rivians and other fashion brands instead of something like a plug-in hybrid Toyota.

This year, it really seemed like Halloween was not en vogue. Perhaps people were too spooked by the upcoming election! But Christmas shit has already started and boy is it cheap Christmas shit. I’ve seen decorations being sold that are made out of literal paper plate–tier cardboard. If you’re buying that shit this early, it ain’t gonna last to Christmas in fucking California let alone somewhere that’s actually cold.

Its anything remotely "collectable". With how easy it is to find things and sell them via ebay/craigslist/fb marketplace etc. theres zero reason for scalpers and resellers not to buy anything remotely "valuable" and hold onto it for months to years until it finally sells. Combined with how pervasive shills and fake sales are in the market it just makes trying to find that nostalgic thing from your childhood a nightmare.

Theres absolutely nothing wrong with having a few mementos and reminders of those warm and fuzzy memories from your childhood. The problem is when you just irrationally buy anything that is tangentially related to that childhood trinket or worse something merely because its popular or the "status" it brings; you become a consoomer.

In my experience I've got/met a solid 3 categories of reseller:

-Older dude (55+) who fucked up his chances of ever being employed one way or the other/never got over his fear of the job market/hates his job so he sucks Amazon/Ebay's dick. Knows video games are a thing/popular so he'll do that
-Turkish (Foreign, I guess). The company had to issue a statement telling us to not allow refunds for the Turkish resellers because they would return hundreds of dollars in goods they couldn't resell.
-Youngish (18-30s) dude who makes his job reselling on ebay/amazon because he's terrified of the actual job market. Calls himself an entrepreneur.

With their powers combined, they've collectively, gravely wounded collecting for collectors/people who genuinely want said thing.

They sit down and watch movies without their phones out for fun. A bad movie is engaging with their hobby. It's why I like them. They talk about modern movies and lean into social media trends but not more than a quirky wink-wink before talking about the movie like any other. They're the good kind of consoomer-adjacent group instead of shit like Vinesauce who 100% avoids any and all social media, yet clearly is hugely influenced by it.

Yeah, movies are slop, but if you like movies, who cares. It's 2 hours of one day gone and you get to make a video about it.
 
I found this video from a Hotwheels collector where he has an existential crisis over spending thousands on toy cars.
This guy compulsively buys Hotwheels and other bizarre things (like toilets?) to remind him of his childhood and to try and fill the empty, meaningless void in his life. What a consoomer. Very sad.

Christmas shit has been around since before it was even october over here, shit pissed me off.

Speaking of which though I'm very glad i was able to find the target exclusive black crippled santa plushie last year or so when that was a thing. Saw nothing like that advertised this year and I only found that infamous marketing failure when target was running low on christmas shit so I guess not even the people working there had faith they'd sell despite corporate hyping it up to show how inclusive they were. It was cheap and cheaply made so the wheelchair has slightly fallen apart since I bought it but it's held up surprisingly well otherwise.

Anyways, back on the topic, I found this youtube video that made me wince in agony for a bit.
This video is not only a consoomer video about old kids tv show stuff but also frames the really easy to come across jimmy neutron movie toys as super rare and woth a lot when a quick search online shows aside from some scalper listings they're like 10-40 dollars depending if you want them used or new.

i think the target (heuh) audience for stuff like this isnt actual fans of christmas decor, ok maybe theres one or two disabled black kids who would get a kick out of it, but its not for them, its for people who buy stuff like this as a statement to put in their online-lesson-backdrop-bookshelf

you know kinda like that target audience of femenist baby books, not actual kids or people with kids, but rather those poisonous school teachers that secretly kinda hate kids but fantasize about shoving that stuff into every classroom in the country

So my mother wanted a cookbook for Christmas, so I stopped in a physical bookstore and stumbled across this collection of junk. Why are there so many of these "unofficial cookbooks" anyway? The usual suspects like Star Wars and Disney are there, but there's ones for shit that doesn't even make me think of food like Halo or Magic the Gathering or the Ticket to Ride boardgame? Are they going to teach me how to make hotpockets but with a funny name? Who would unironically use these?

i can think of quite a few movies, games or franchises that have odd fantastical foods in them i would love to try, or at least making something close to similar to
but also, let's be real here, these are last minute gifts
these are "hey billy i heard you like uhh the star wars, enjoy this, it shows i vaaaaaguely know something or other about you but it's very surface level"
it's easy separation into categories that you can shop for

And before someone replies to me telling me he looks somewhat like a soyjak, he actually is one. He's the guy someone traced over to make the gapejak variant.
