Private investigators are usually former cops who know how to handle evidence.

I've known a few people with no legal, cop, or other relevant experience, but a lot of states require something like cop experience. The one PI I knew personally mainly worked for insurance companies and sometimes subcontracted for other agencies working for the SSA on disability fraud.

I never watched much Nick Rekieta back when he was well-liked, but from what I understand, I don't think he was ever particularly knowledgable about the law. I think people liked his personality and format, which are both completely tarnished beyond much repair.
