It got higher billing than Pikachu and Charizard in the US.

The problem with Poliwhirl's popularity is that it simply wasn't popular.
Similar to Clefairy. In the original manga run I remember it was pushed as THE partner pokemon, but never caught on. Now I'm wondering at what point did Pikachu become the face of the franchise with others being activelly pushed, as well as the starters.

Raichu should have been the mascot if they were hell bent on the Pikachu line.

I'm at the point where I'm suffering from Pikachu-fatigue since they stick this thing in EVERYTHING. Raichu is so much cooler looking and doesn't have an annoying high-pitched voice.

Wouldn’t work. Picachu is inherently more cute and cuddly.

If anything Pikachu needs something that can make it hit like the poster child of the franchise it is that is not locked behind one game or another.

...you 'bout to die dude.

Poliwhirl's popularity is largely due to Satoshi Tajiri liking it and it being subsequently pushed in marketing; it faded because it was never as popular with the fans as it was with its creators. Granted each Gen has had Pokemon like that - Marill was famously Gen II's attempt to replace Pikachu - but Poliwhirl is remarkable given how hard it was pushed compared to how quickly it was forgotten.

Marill (colloquially Pikablu) was only cool and exciting when it was appearing in early media like Pikachu's Vacation and Southern Islands TCG as an all-new Pokemon, beyond 151. Once GS actually released, that dropped off, partly because how rare it was. It was in Union Cave, which was totally optional anyway. You stumbled across it early game but it was dark and you moved on. The encounter rate by walking was 1% (not impossible, but it would be like running into Clefairy on Mt. Moon...unlike Clefairy there was no indication Marill was there). Surfing was significantly better but by the time you got Surf you had a good water 'mon anyway.

And then Gen 6 came and gave it a Fairy typing to help abuse it's Huge Power ability and that's when it (and more specifically Azumarill) saw a HUGE resurgence in popularity.

Seriously i lost count as to how many times i saw this thing in online battles.

Well, again, being able to catch it makes a big difference. It's why Clefairy was a doomed shillmon.

Butterfree was fairly popular back in the day, both Ash and Richie had one in the anime, and it worked because Butterfree was both easy to catch as a Caterpie, and made a good early-game psychic 'mon (though its lousy stats meant it was doomed to Bill's PC by late game).

Since it levels up quicker than other Pokemon, it can get real crazy powerful if you stick with it. I stuck with Butterfree in my first FRLG playthru and by the time I hit Sevii Islands, it was level 78 while my other mon were lv 50-60s. Don't sleep on it in competitive, it can be deadly in the right hands. I managed to fuck over a Rayquaza(you heard that right) once by putting it to sleep and leading to it getting quickly killed by another Pokemon, so it can still be useful even if it can't kill most opponents.

It's fun to see all the buffs it got over the gens. Gen 3 gave it Huge power, but it couldn't get Stab. Gen 4 gives it physical Water moves and Aqua Jet. Gen 5 has weather wars and Azumarill is right at home there in rain teams. Gen 6 gives it Fairy typing and Play Rough as well, and it holds steady from that point on. I won't be surprised if they give it a Mega in AZ.

Poliwhirl was one of six 23-K gold cards from Burger King.

So yeah, they really wanted Poliwhirl as one of the big faces of Pokémon. And honestly, had they given Misty a Poliwag in the first season instead of waiting until the Orange Islands, it actually might have.

Something I miss from the N64 Stadium games is that when a move missed, the animation would still be shown, then it would show the move missing. At least the Mystery Dungeon games still show move animations even if a move misses. Also, I still miss the more realistic and less 8-bit sounding 'mon noises from the N64 Stadium vidya.

It's the same thing in the regular TCG as well.

Sucks when I would get a Starmie with "Illuminate" or a Steelix with "Rock Head"*, so at least there's the "Ability Capsule" in ORAS.

* And noticing it only after I already evolved and used up the item to evolve.

Guess who just saved the world and is lost after the event (jesus the whiplash of experiencing such a good map with the other game and this one hurts.

Edit: I had to look it up and this is where the hack stops, since it is a dropped game. But not being able to go back to Kanto and challenge the league for real really sucks.

This was my team, Lapras was the HM slave but it was charizard on his place but he wouldn't comply so I removed him.

Man this game is really weird, there are lots of things that are bad like some sprites or maps, but the idea of adapting the whole anime is such a nice concept. Way better than yellow even if it is unfinished.
