Dessalines is the main architect of Haiti as we know it, but if I’m not mistaken LOuverture also reinstated slavery too.

I need to dig it up (for other reasons unrelated to this conversation), but I first came across it in A New World Begins.

Dessalines reinstated slavery by forced labor.

Louverture never actually did. He got accused by political rivals when he decided not to piss off the British by telling them where an abolitionist was.

He might not have done it as much as Dessalines. It's an interesting issue because it seems to me like Dessalines is used as a sort of scapegoat, similar to how Stalin catches blame for all the evil in the world while Lenin gets a pass. It's hard to get good information on it - everything written about L'Ouverture slobbers his knob - but he had himself crowned president 'for the rest of his glorious life," instituted forced labor, proposed purchasing slaves from the Atlantic Slave Trade to keep the population up (I've mistakenly referred to this before as him having done it, looking at the passage more closely it was just that he considered it).

I'm no L'Oueverture expert, but I've got a strong intutition that he was a shitbag. As I understand he flip-flopped a lot, basically demonstrated the behavior of a Third World kleptocrat.

So Haitians on the bus are just as bad as the stories I hear of Indians on public transit. Everyone is on speakerphone yelling and or listening to obnoxious music all in the same small space at the same time. Do they not realize they are being a disturbance to people around them? Do they realize and just don't care? Some questions I will never have answered cause I can't understand their babbling.
