However, instead of presenting this in the way Nellie Bly presented Ten Days in a Mad-House he decided it would be better to write a fictional story with characters. It's about a dirt poor European family who experience literally every possible bad thing to happen ever plus more bad shit. I'm talking multiple dead babies and everything. Finally the main character learns the power of friendship that muh heckin' socialism is the only thing that can save him and all those bad things happened because of capitalism. It is painfully dramatic.

Afterwards Sinclair was reportedly coping and seething over the fact The Jungle caused food safety reform rather than bringing about a glorious socialist revolution. So yeah, even if it was inspired by reality he 100% intended for it to be propaganda.

Yeah this is why I share teddy roosevelts contempt for the guy. He did more to damage his cause than reasonable discussion on regulation and safety could.
