Im sorry to repost a steam review but this user put in words all of the complaints i had. It reads:
"I think this game needs to seriously consider why it wants to be a roguelike.
It simulates a static continent, with the same quests and main story each time, meaning each run isn't a joyful plunge into randomness, but a rehash of last time. The range of items is pretty modest, meaning you're not playing an RNG lotto for interesting combos or basing your build off of a run-specific item. And you play pretty similar each time. (Sure, there are different classes or stat builds, but lots of games do that without wanting to be a roguelike.)
Worse, runs are LONG. In the beginning, it's fun. It forces you to learn the system. But when you hit take-off, you go four, eight, hours, and then die suddenly. What is the purpose of having to restart here when you die? That's a long way to retread through similar content. It all reminds me of Sunless Seas, where it was like a fossil from early development that it wanted to be a permadeath 20+ hour game, when what the game really cared about was art and story and ambiance.
This world is perfectly capable of having a lives system based on cloning, having more intentional blockers that encourage (fun) restarting, or allowing one save per hour. Why does this game want to default be a roguelike?
The best part of this game is the weird Dark Tower-like ambiance and auteur-like writing and UI and visual design. The worst part is that it's strapped onto permadeath gameplay, when the game clearly isn't interesting in being subservient to making that fun or respecting my time as a mortal human being.
I'm aware you can turn off permadeath -- that's not the point."
THE GAME WILL NOT RESPECT YOU. THE GAME IS GOING TO SHIT ON YOU BECAUSE THE DEVELOPER ENJOYS SHITTING ON PEOPLE. THE GAME WAS NEVER MEANT TO BE FUN. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS FUCKING GIGANTIC PIECE OF SHIT.
