Artists don't make a lot of money these days unless they have massive talent and have been nepo'd in or were very lucky.
Many artists go to art schools. They take out loans for these schools, but going to college is not a prerequisite for being successful in the arts as it is very hierarchical and full of nepotism.
Most full-time artists are dumb.

I think this is a big part (along with straight fetishes), plus the fact that the gay community doesn't actually like dating or fucking effeminate gays for the most part right now. If you go on gay dating apps most of the requests are for "masc 4 masc". Guys will masc themselves up for these apps and hookups. No femmes or fats are solid rules for most dudes. They have some hatred for being gay so even if they kinda accept it and get with men, they still don't want any association with "faggotry". Or hate all women and things associated with women. Effeminate gays get other gay men telling them they're not attractive to gay men, that if they wanted feminine they'd date a woman, so eventually they start thinking feminine = woman and that's what they are. They internalize the idea that only straight men like femininity and that femininity triumphs biology. It starts the moment gays enter the dating pool and few take enough time away from dating and hookups to process their feelings and instead jump to the extreme solution to Troon out and go for "straight" dudes. I've seen some degree of this mentality among some rather butch or naturally masculine looking lesbians too. They get told they're too masculine to be women and aren't attractive to lesbians and then they feel they might actually be men. Or that it's better to present as such.
As an aside, this makes it funnier when you see fat feminine pooners think they can get gay dudes. Even if they were born male, they'd never get laid and would probably Troon out the other way
