Figured I'd make a post to get some opinions on what to try out with this Nextfest.
I only tried two so far;

The Precinct: Top down old GTA style but you are a cop. Looked interesting but the demo was meh. A grand total of 20 minutes of their pre-alpha build, which is a bit scary since the game has been in dev-hell for awhile now.

Keep Driving: Pixel art game where you drive a car through Not-Germany. Fully 2D where the driving is automated and you 'battle' obstacles like potholes and tractors. Was ok, very 'vibes' of substance but the demo was a decent length and repayable.

Post your thoughts to help fellow Kiwis shift through all the slop!

I tried Sulfur and uninstalled the game out of disgust. I tried to look past the art style, but the tipping point was the dialogue options. If you asked an autistic millennial with an unhealthy obsession with Adventure Time and Reddit to write the dialogue, this is what you'd get.
Oh, and there's a pregnant man/troon named Ralphie in the base camp.

Beyond that, the gameplay didn't hook me. Gravity felt weird during platforming and the gunplay was unpleasant as even the iron sights are done in that God-awful artstyle. I don't know what the proper description for it is, but I've seen identical styles in the Google play store and hate it equally.
Would not recommend, even though I wish I could.

Sand Looked interesting, Depends on how they make longterm gameplay because if it ends up like being like that pirate ship game where the only real "progress" you make is decals and ship cosmetics I'm giving it a pass. https://youtu.be/lYHPgxtg9d0

The only thing I tried was the Voin demo. It's a first person hack and slash game that I think is made by just one dude. There's a bunch of weapons and other items with a million affixes that can make for some funky builds but I didn't really understand any of it and just threw on the biggest number thing. The world is a bit bare but you can climb all of it. For some reason, it uses limited dodges which slows down the game, though it's still fast when in the thick of combat. It also does this forces you to sheathe your weapon if you want to use the mega dash. The combat itself is satisfying but it favors dodging over blocking/parrying.

I'm not really able to comb through it just yet but any terriara/core keeper style game in there?

Gave Rogue Flight a shot. Pretty fun! Like a combination of Robotech (look and feel) with Afterburner 2. Really nails the late 80s anime vibe they where going for, a lot of great details in the presentation, and the gameplay of the demo (while short) has a potential to be a great arcade action experience.

Looks like a cracked out Starfox game with anime tiddies. Hopefully it turns out fun, normally not my cup of tea but I could see that being a blast after cracking open a few beers.

I didn't play anything but wishlisted stuff to look into.

Bonaparte: a Mechanized Revolution
Napoleonic alt history, you play a self-insert alt-Napoleon (male "Cesar" or female "Celine") but everyone else is a historical white male.

House of Legacy
Chinese 4X dynasty manager, smells of overpromises.

The Last Winter Knight
Sad medieval VN.

Proverbs
Picross.

First Break
Strange experimental game by tranny pedophile "JuneFlower" (thirsts for an anime toddler on xitter). Game doesn't look pedo.
(Note: I don't know if troons are involved in other games, they could be. This developer smelled like one so I checked.)

Rewinder 2
Rewinder 2. Here's Rewinder 1 by the way (medieval Chinese fantasy point and click).

The Coma 2B: Catacomb
Korean horror game, new standalone installment in a series.

Whispers of the Eyeless
Numbercruncher pseudo-RPG (I think). Releases soon.

Stratagem Lost
Weebshit friend raising game. I don't hate the art.

Chrono Sword
Pixel art isometric soulslike, blond chick protagonist.

Vyanka's Memories
Pixel art sidescroller soulslike, ginger chick protagonist.

Forestrike
Katana Zero but kung fu in medieval China.

Drova: Forsaken Kin
what's it called? top-down but tilted. Pixel art soulslike.

Undivine
Pixel art side-view soulslike, this one is room-based I think.

Yellow Room
Visual novel that's black and white for #aesthetics.

Onikura
Pixel art weeb boss rush.

Spirit of the Samurai
Weeb metroidvania, this one's not anime or pixel art. Has a kitty.

I tried AI Limit thinking it'd be another mid anime souls a la Code Vein but it's much much worse. Stiff as hell, slow, unresponsive, and ugly. Only got 15 minutes in before putting it down.

Rogue Flight is pretty fun if you're looking to scratch that Star Fox itch, but don't want to play something furry. Wishlisted for now.

Has anyone come across any promising open world RPGs? I'm been looking forward to Stoneshard for like 4 years and it probably won't be done for another 4.

Tribe Nation -Player takes role of Celtic tribal leader running away from Romans of Julius Caesar. Light real-time strategy mixed with FTL-esque campaign map.

Hardly a soulslike, more like a 2D Gothic. The game itself is pretty good in general (great soundtrack and combat mechanics), although the 2D art is just ugly low res pixel vomit and there's basically no enemy variety. Publisher's media dude is an unchecked sped who calls people gamergaters/incels. Game's development was co-founded by German Reich, which explains why he chimps out whenever someone mentions that it has the body type 1/type 2 and other minor DEI things.
