Apologies if I'm I'm misunderstanding, but if you're saying that Patrick doesn't show signs of anxiety and depression I'd have to disagree. Depression's obvious. Aside from the time "the monster" almost won, I think that his entire persona is a mask for a deep well of self-loathing and the suppressed knowledge that he's completely wasted his life. I would also argue that his constant need to correcT the record is motivated by anxiety. It drives him crazy that someone, somewhere in the world believes something about him that he doesn't want them to believe.

Part of me still thinks this has to be some Kaufman-esque joke, just the most dedicated, well funded and all consuming one we have ever seen. It's almost too perfect, like someone invented the ultimate 'ugly American' caricature and brought them to life. I've said this before, but Ricky really is as close to a living, breathing Ignatius J. Reilly as there has ever been.

When Rick first started using Twitter he was pretty mundane, some may even say completely harmless. The contrast is striking. I do believe that his own retarded lack of self-regard combined with the enshittification of everything to put him in a spot where he is aware that the ship is sinking fast, but doesn't know what's doing it. And it leads to everything you've described. His tough guy act that he tries to put on even as he's being arrested and his voice is cracking into a very dorky squeal are pretty telling. He's too emotionally, not even intellectually per se, retarded to plug all of the holes, and steer the boat towards the harbour.

If Niki left or something dramatic happened to him at best he would be a shell of his former, funny self, and at worst he'd brain himself.

What's always puzzled me is how normal his writing is. It's not good by any means, but right at home with other contemporary SciFi-slop from the likes of Andy Weir or Ernest Cline. Bad, but bad in a way publishers seem to like.
You'd never suspect that Gate Crashers or whatever is the work of such an uniquely deranged-delusional, borderline retarded alcoholic fat fuck.

It's a window into the kind of individual Rick could've been if we got a massive solar flare or they forcibly unplugged him from the internet. His books may suck, but yes. Even getting to publish them is a small accomplishment, and if he wasn't seething about prison, stalker child enjoyment all day long on x.com, a platform whose owner he detests but he's beholden himself to regardless he could even have worked on his craft a little bit, and someone out there would've been able to claim that they read a Fat novel, and they enjoyed it.

As it is though, his legacy is being obstinately retarded about things he can't even conceptualise properly because he thinks he knows it all already. Hell, his personal highlights aren't even his books. His personal highlights centre around the infinite monkey theorem that is his brain rarely managing to put two fake-witty sentences together so he gets rexeeted by the political e-talking heads he worships. Given all of his early life and even current privilege he could maybe have lived off the pen, but his narcissism made it so that he chose to live on his knees instead. Devastatingly pathetic.
