This was just a hearing in front of the judge, there is no jury to impress and no semantics to challenge.
The judge has seen every kind of depraved parents, mistreated kids and the relatives lying to cover it up to prevent jailtime for their children.
The father was not every credible, but him being present shows there is at least some form of familiar support network that can help them out.

It all resulted in the children not going back right away and are staying with relatives (I think it was implied they are with relatives now).

I expect a lot harsher questions if the father would try to testify to the same things in the criminal proceedings, going as far as confronting him with the swinging, cucking, balldos, and general decline of his son live on stream for the world to see. How credible his statements are also relies on what bodycam footage shows the house actually looked like inside.
