Two newborn patas monkeys being hand-raised at New York zoo

A New York zoo announced the births of two patas monkeys -- half-sisters -- who are now being hand-raised by keepers.

The Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse said a monkey named Iniko gave birth to a baby girl named Sisu on April 26, while her older sister, Kasi, gave birth to a girl named Mushu on May 11. Both babies were fathered by Mac, the leader of the zoo's patas troop.

The zoo said in a news release that both monkey mothers "struggled to demonstrate maternal instincts necessary to raise their young," so both babies are being hand-raised by zookeepers.

"We are so glad to welcome these primate newborns to our zoo, and are fortunate to have such an amazing zoo to call home," County Executive Ryan McMahon said. "The animal care team's diligent work has ensured little Sisu and Mushu have a safe and healthy future."

Zoo officials said patas monkeys have a high infant mortality rate in the wild, and it is not uncommon for mothers to be "uninterested in or incapable of raising their young."

"Given the adversity that this species faces with reproduction, Iniko and Kasi's babies are an exceptional contribution to the zoo's patas monkey troop and the North American population," Zoo Executive Director Ted Fox said. "Since the babies are so significant, our primate specialists took action to protect these little patas babies and safeguard their health so we can reach our ultimate goal of having them eventually join the rest of our patas troop."

dawwwwwwwwww
they're making whoop wheep noises like a real soundcloud rapper already

They are too cute! Here's hoping that the zookeepers can get these newborns integrated into the troop one way or another. :)
Hearing about primates "rejecting" their babies is so intriguing. It almost never happens in the wild; it's mainly seen in primates who themselves have been hand-reared. It's gotta be heartbreaking to give birth, only to not know how to care for it...

tl;dr monke cool

Isn't this natures way of saying "Yeah, this design sucks..."

That isn't what the article said:

Apparently these monkeys are just terrible parents full stop.

They look like hybrids of monkeys and mice.

They look like the monkey rat hybrid from the 80s pole position cartoon.

I didn't know some species of monkeys were like this about their young. Very common in birds. When raising backyard poultry, certain breeds of ducks and chickens are better at raising their own young than others. Many finch species in captivity must have their eggs put in society finch nests, since society finches will happily raise any baby but a Lady Gouldian will just look at the baby like "what the hell is this?" and go as far away as possible.

I donate to a place in the UK called monkey world.

They rescue and rehome abused and neglected primates from all over the world. if you like this kind of stuff check out their you tube channel.

It's like a soap opera watching these animals go from abused pets to learning to be a monkey again. lots of terrible stories of neglect and abuse but its heartwarming to see a chimp go from cowering in a cage to running around in a group of his own kind.

edit: I forgot the stupid link
