You could be very wealthy and still be looked upon as less than by those who come from money. A working class man who set up his own business and made a £15m personal fortune would still be looked down upon by those who have a fraction of that wealth. There are multiple things that add to someone being of "lower stock" in the eyes of the upper middle class and upper class, things such as where you were born, how you sound, how you present yourself, where you were educated, what your beliefs are etc.. Britains strong emphasis on class goes back to the early middle ages with the days of peasantry, merchants, landowners, those with titles and of course nobles.. all the way to the Victorian era with the stereotypical street urchins and gin addicts of Britain. It never went away, and it never will.. in the latter half of the 20th century there was an illusion of classism being on the decline, but it just became less pronounced and behind closed doors the working class are still looked at as being scum of the earth. The mask slips though when it comes to politics or certain issues, just look at all the posh cunts publically mocking the working class over the past few days because of the riots.

Ironically, the upper middle class are actually worse than the upper class in many ways. The upper middle class are those who aim to become upper class but never truly will, therefore they take on the same elitist mentality even though they aren't "old money" like the upper class, they have probably only had wealth in their lineage for 2-4 generations. At least you know where you stand with the upper class.

All the people [good example above] who understand the difference between new money and old money will have a good handle on how class exists in the United States. Some have said that it was solely dependent on money, making it sound like mobility is more achievable, but that has been a false dream for a very long time now, and while the terms and divisions are somewhat different, the old/new is very much in place. In my experience, the forced meme of racial guilt overshadows class and exists very much on purpose here. May be worth mentioning (if this is accurate, I'm not British) that in Britain class has accents.

That's somewhat true in the US, just in the sense that poor people are less likely (different values, don't care, more education) to bend to discrimination and suppress their regional accents and in that there are certain grammatical features that seem to pop up in "uneducated" speech more in general.

Somehow, for some reason, some groups are able to keep a common perception that they're high value even when it should be purely subjective. Like, for example, even if it's something that just comes out of Hollywood movies, everyone just "knows" that the jocks and cheerleaders are the high status people. I wonder where that comes from. I agree. However, even if people don't bring walkie talkies, at the bare minimum they should be acquiring burner phones if they don't already have them. My understanding is that the UK is turbocucked when it comes to buying SIM cards (requiring ID, etc), unlike in the US. However, I believe there is a secondary marketplace for burner SIMs and you can probably still import them. Regardless, it is probably not a good idea to bring your main devices as they WILL be seized. Public transport is also risky, so arranging private transportation when possible is probably a good idea.
Goggles and helmets are highly advisable if you can obtain them (even a bicycle or skate helmet is better than nothing). A gas mask is ideal, but not everyone has one. If you are looking to be prepared for potential future unrest in your area, I would recommend looking into MIRA gas mask (a lot of police departments actually use these), especially the MIRA CM-6M/7M. Don't forget to buy CBRN filters to go with it if you are concerned about tear gas.
Ear protection is also often overlooked, but can be very important if your local police department has an LRAD system (or any other noise-based crowd control system). These can sometimes cause long-term damage, so it's based to err on the side of being prepared.
In case you don't have adequate face protection and end up getting tear-gassed or pepper sprayed, the American Academy of Opthamology has this handy guide. Tl;dr don't waste time packing a bunch of milk to a protest. It doesn't work much better than water or saline. The important thing is to have a large volume of SOMETHING clean to irrigate your eyes.
For further detail on preparation for attending a "fiery but mostly peaceful protest," Antifag blogs like ItsGoingDown and Crimethinc.com can sometimes have good resources on things like personal protective gear and protest first aid.
