The Barneswalker and his type have a worse problem. They are fanatics. They will often encourage their clients to make stands on principle and to become martyrs to nonsensical causes. They will put the client's interest in pursuing a lost cause ahead of what are the actual best interests of the client.

But in an ironic sense, Barneswalker is the best attorney for someone like Nick. An attorney in the end has to believe in their client, pursue the objectives the client desires rather than trying to second-guess them or be a parent to them. The other special concern here is that Nick is an attorney. Nothing he is doing or instructing his attorney to do can be said to be out of ignorance.

My only problem with this is there's little to suggest Nick was gonna adopt any of these cockamamie strategies before Barnes showed up.

As we saw from the May 28th transcript, Nick admitted that the house was fucked up, and seemed to indicate he knew damn well the kid was gonna test positive for cocaine.

Then Viva and Barnes start in on their bullshit, and suddenly Ms. Sweep is guilty of perjury and the drug test is total bunk.

As much of a arrogant dumb fuck as Nick is, I would be willing to at least entertain the notion he's being massively gaslit by Barnes and his ilk right now. And they're doing it because they see $$$ in it, and know how big an ego has. Nick is highly manipulative, but is himself susceptible to being manipulated given the right person and tactics (Dick Masterson seems highly adept at it, as evidenced by how Nick was browbeaten into forgiving Ralph).

I feel you aren't giving Nick enough culpability. You are approaching this as someone who thinks rationally. That isn't how the criminal element behaves. If they could, they wouldn't be criminals. They are constantly scrambling and trying to change their stories. Even if there is overwhelmingly guilt and evidence that is contradicting them, they'll still do it anyway. Why? All to either win in the end or just convince some dumb people that the authorities are the ones who are lying.

No matter if Barnes was involved or not, Nick was always going to try and scramble. Maybe Barnes has given some of the strategies and excuses Nick has been using. Nick however if he didn't have those would have still been coming up with some on his own. Maybe different ones, but still some. His responses in the transcript you mentioned is probably in itself an attempt to scramble as he was first put on the spot for his crimes.

He was cooperative at the May 28th hearing, but immediately after it all started to change:

- May 28 Sweep visited the house. She was denied access to Nick and Kayla's bedroom.
- May 30 Nick and Kayla take the hair drug test. But at some point before June 6th, they change their mind and refuse to release the drug tests.

Things seemed to totally break down after the june 6th hearing.

- June 14 Nick officially replaces his previous attorney in the CPS matter with the barneswalker.

- June 18 The information from the June 6th hearing leaks out including the child testing positive for coke. Nick goes onstream around the same time and accuses sweep of perjury presumably in the June 6th hearing.

I think that the June 6th hearing was a decision point for Nick. It was clear that the court and CPS wasn't going along with him. Plus the positive test on the daughter was a big change.

Barnes was talking big about the criminal charges early on, but I'm not sure how much he was talking about CPS and family court strategy. At least in public. We can't know what he talked to Nick potentially about in private of course.

The police report also mentions that minimal damage was done to the door, so it's not as if they actually battered the door down. Obviously, we won't know the extent of the damage unless we see the footage, but that combined with the youngest seemingly treating the cop as a trusted adult gives me the impression that it wasn't anything like some people are imagining (or how Nick would like it to be imagined).

It's actually pretty hard to OD on coke in a dangerous way. It's not like heroin where it can depress your respiration or cause you to pass out and have a Jimi Hendrix Experience. It's more likely to have a heart-racing incredibly unpleasant paranoid experience but unless it actually triggers a cardiac arrest (like Len Bias), you're probably going to live.

It was that fear of a cocaine induced cardiac arrest that made me stop using the stuff. The problem with that heart racing paranoid experience is that you think you're going to die. (And taking a dose that didn't make me feel like I was about to die made me feel robbed because I wasn't getting 'properly' high.)

I reached a point at which, every time I did it, I was certain I was going to croak and my wife or my kids would come home and find me dead. At some point, it sunk in that it was inducing dysphoria rather than euphoria, at which point, I quit.

I think the home visit on May 28 took place before the hearing based on the time of the hearing in the late afternoon and Nick apparently referencing it in the hearing transcript. He seemed more annoyed that they hadn't returned his frantic shower calls before arriving.

According to the timeline as I recall, they asked Nick for the door code when he got pulled over, he asked for the warrant which that Officer didn't have, so he didn't give them shit. By the time he and that officer got to the house and they gave him the warrant (which he threw down on the ground like a child), they had already entered the property.

It's not surprising, they don't want people flushing/destroying evidence
