Hm, it seems odd that the underground reservoir could explode when the oxygen is on the surface.
Fires in that era would surely burn better, but fuel-air-explosions also require pretty careful distribution of the fuel for an effective explosion. Dunno if that could happen to the size of an extinction event. Iridium concentrations in the stratae coinciding with the CP extinction suggests a massive asteroid impact, or maybe several. Or maybe some traps exploding. Seems a bit more likely to happen than some oil/gas reserve exploding in a teraton extinction level fuel-air explosion.
