Apparently Italy changed their birthright citizen laws, now you need to actually be able to speak some degree of Italian to get Citizenship (this would allow Keffals to remain living in the Republic of Ireland).
Essentially, they procrastinated too long on getting the citizenship and the law ended up changing, and being on an immigrants Visa they're likely not just going to give them permission to marry due to worries about sham marriages for the purposes of immigration.
Hence having to go this other route first.
So essentially Keffals now needs to learn Italian and pray they get Italian citizenship or eventually it's deportation time back to Canada time.
