Thanks for the recommendations. You guys might be interested in Emerson's essay on women. It's interesting because it's pro-women's-suffrage; the reason that's interesting is that it means that if he's saying something anti-feminist, it's because he absolutely has to. It'd be too obvious to deny the reality at the time (the mid-19th century).

Some of these admissions are pretty big—bear in mind, the guy writing these two paragraphs is arguing that women should be able to vote:

Edit: I actually wonder exactly what he means by the word "sympathy" here; our modern vocabulary would read it as "emotional empathy or pity", but he might also mean it in the sense of "sympathetic magic". Emerson had some occult flavor to him, as did many in that time. "Sympathy" in this context may mean emotion, but it may also mean "ability to be effected by a kind of resonant causality". He may be talking about that "direct perception" that I mentioned earlier.

If you want to see someone really lay into women, read Schopenhauer's essay on them. I disagree with his polygamy advocacy, but it's an entertaining read.
