Correct me if I am being snobbish or elitist, but anyone who wants to be a sci fi or fantasy author should have read the Lord of the rings in its entirety.
I would even argue that any kind of professional writer in the English language should too.

I could accept someone having not read LotR, but then you shouldn't have strong opinions one way or another.

I'm even fine with people who have read it, and hated it. I've read some quite good critiques from authors I respect, and even Tolkien had people whom he respected that didn't think much of it. Tolkien himself would say it paled in comparison to the Silmarillion (truly his life's work, and one he never finished).

holy fuck it's not like Tom Bombadil or Arwen or something changed or removed in the movies! It's fucking all there in black and white! Sure, the movie changes some slight things (Aragorn, Gandalf, maybe Elrond, Galadriel could have wielded the one ring to their victory over sauron but to their eventual defeat to evil), ruins the characters horribly in obscure ways, but it's fucking clear - these are not good words, this is not a good thing - AND - it's not even a terribly awesome weapon unless you're already powerful and (more importantly) twisted enough to use it as it was meant to be used.

Tolkien designed the Black Speech of Mordor to be the ugliest language that he, a Professor of Linguisitics and Philology could devise, to represent all the cruelty and barbarity and evil of the Dark Lord and his master.
He'd probably vomit down his pipe if he knew this FAT fucking poser had that shit tattooed on him and tried to use it as a point of pride. Pat probably can't even read the Cirth to know what it says without going online for a translation, despite Tolkien going out of his way to make the script easy to pick up, especially the (modified, with vowel signs) Sindarin mode which is probably the easiest to use to write in English, with a little practice.

A True and Honest Tolkien fan would have something in Quenya, or at least Sindarin, not that.
It looks ugly to read and it sounds ugly to speak. Its something only an Orc would admire.

We were forced to read Tolkien in sixth grade. I’m pretty sure the only book Pat may have read outside of elementary school was Where the Red Fern Grows.

I am fine with them having read it and hated it, but if they want to be a great writer of sci fi or fantasy, or even a mediocre one, then reading it is required.
It's such a singular influence on all fantasy and sci fi which came after it, so while people can think they read it because they have seen and read so much derivative work, it is the first step to understanding modern fantasy.

It is like someone trying to write about Christian history, and not having read the bible. Maybe it doesn't contain any insight on the subsequent events, but it is required to know the key motivation and influence behind Christianity as a religion and cultural force.

John Rhys Davis confessed that he hated reading the book as a child/adolescent, saying that it was a chore. But I doubt he could have played Gimli the Dwarf so well had he not.

If Fatrick was just a random fat prick, then fine. It's the fact that he seriously does think that he is not just a sci fi author, which he is insofar as he has published sci fi novels with his name on them, he thinks he is a well read and learned sci fi author.
 
Pat's consoomer mindset leaves him all but devoid of feeling and emotion in his books. He is the ultimate imposter. This guy calls himself an author, and he never mentions other people's art or creative works because he could care less about them. If he were serious about his career, he'd be reading, writing, and refining his abilities every waking moment, but Pat is passionless. To him, it's having your name on the cover that's important, so he shits out soulless slop for people who think Ready Player One is a masterpiece. Even they couldn't be convinced to pay money for this shit.

It's amazing how someone who so often bloviates and blusters until red in the face brings absolutely nothing to the table. Pat has nothing profound to say, as life for him is surface-level.
