It was reasonable enough when Usenet was low volume, and worked (well up until you ran out of inodes and the filesystem choked on cocks).

Well, (acktually...) it can also be reasonable depending on the file system, use case and engine. this sounds like a home grown datalake alternative to delta lake or databricks. Id be curious why home grown too in this case

But I say that with the tech note of if its not in memory, its on the disk. true of all databases. Just not in what we'd call flat file, csv or anything human readable.

More interesting to me is the glossed over note of why they had to add an abstraction layer on top, which is *unusual* to say the least. And its in the damn article.

They assumed scale of events, not scale of systems. The real fucking answer for a modern system at enterprise scale for monitoring (idgaf about observability as jargon) - is *both*.

Thats been true with almost any monitoring tool no matter what its monitoring for a good couple of decades now.

Its a very strange assumption for a company trying to hook big fish. Its not a strange assumption for a company going for the small to midsized companies but then you gotta be easy and cheap to implement. Honeycomb from everything I've seen is not playing that market either.

I dont think they fucjing have a viable market niche or strategy they just have a product that kinda works and does so enough to burn investor money. It can take 10 or 15 years to burn through that if you're not operating at 0 revenue in but slow burning the investor money because you can't turn a profit. Some failed startups do hang on that long.

But im just speculating from the cheap seats.
Another interesting note is if you have money, but not "fuck you" money - one of the reasons to stay employed is getting employer sponsored health care. Autoimmune would be enough for it. But HIV definitely would be a reason to be on a group plan.

Usenet wasn't really designed anticipating that it would need the level of scalability it did. Originally it was a pure oligarchy of the so-called backbone nodes that decided what was allowed, with rudimentary democracy only added later, and outright (near) anarchy like alt.* even later, and abject lunacy like binaries finally took it over nearly completely.

There was always a certain level of voodoo in tweaking the filesystem to cope with something it was never really designed to deal with, like inode ratio, expiration times, etc.

Anyway to bring it back to Fong-Dong for a bit, this bullshit observability thing he's involved with is a solution in search of a problem, or perhaps more accurately, a solution in search of a problem that doesn't already have multiple far better solutions.

In fact, that wouldn't be entirely true when talking LGBT people. A lot of HIV/AIDS activists are actually negative, they just so happen to be LGBT.

This is something that is rather old school LGBT activism, though. Back in the day, even before gay marriage was the political goalpost of LGBT activism, it focused on educating about HIV/AIDS and possible bias/injustice on medical treatment for LGBT people, especially those with HIV/AIDS.

This is absolutely ancient, though, and predates LFJ by far.

I think @Temperance XIV has made an amazing investigative report on LFJ and I'm also certain he is infected. Which in and on itself is not a crime, but when you consider the rest of his behaviour with this tidbit of information it doesn't look very good on him.

So, Elliot Fong was born in 1987. He would have been 16 in 2003 (That's how old this fuck is). Dropped out of college in 2007.. He took a multi-STD test in 2011 at the age of 24. He moved to Boston in 2008ish so he could not have been involved with the Joy Luck Club as a homeless faggot in SF after 2008.
