I think that's exactly what happened to Nick, he became popular and he suddenly thought he needed to act like he was a rock-star. After we'd heard more about how Rekieta didn't feed their kids and their clothes were all stinky, it starts to make a lot more sense. Kids are really sensitive to when a situation is uncomfortable or not right somehow. That said, I seem to recall that Aaron's first wife had objections to the association with the Rekietas. Do we know what the first wife knew and when and how she knew it? I don't recall seeing any discussion of this.

I wouldn't jump the gun at Kayla's family yet. Junkies can be quite manipulative in their behavior, and rarely you can force someone to seek help (at least in this day and age). Maybe they should've reported the state of things to the authorities before all of this, but I don't think we know enough of what was happening behind the scenes to make a judgement call.
