There's a lot of people like that and it's very weird. They'll be like, "Yeah I snort coke all the time but at least I don't do HEROIN or POP PAIN PILLS." I don't have the energy to dig into this psychology. It's a lot to unpack.

I once offered to buy a classmate a drink for coming in clutch and she turned me down because her dad is an alcoholic and she "doesn't want to go down that path." Guess what! I found out later she's a stoner.

Often times a lot of addicts engage in denial by identifying things they don't do, that they erroneously identify as being normal behaviour for addicts.

I'm not an addict, because I'm holding down a highly paid job! I've got a career! I only drink on the weekends! Addicts would take other *worse* drugs.

With that said, in most instances its not so much what you take as it is how much, how often and why. I know plenty of people who take cocaine, but really can take it or leave it. Others I know have a beer and are scrambling to find a dealer to get a bag in. I would never say I was an addict, but my drinking has gotten out of hand in the past, and I have reined it in as a result, but comparatively I was drinking a lot less than many people who don't have any sort of problem.

Your friend who refused a drink but smokes weed may just recognise for her drinking is a terrible idea - weed might be too, but can't blame her for not wanting to repeat the alcoholic nonsense her parents subjected her to.
