TRIGGER WARNING

So here’s something that’s been bothering me more and more the further I am into my own transition: the obsession for beauty. I know I’ve posted a few selfies of myself trying to look as good as possible, but it somehow makes me feel a bit dirty; as if being beautiful is a requirement of being woman. As if I need this validiation.

In my everyday life I don’t need beauty. I don’t want to be called pretty, or god forbid ”cute”. That feels so incredibly superficial. All I want is a female physique, and I’d be happy and balanced going on with my life.

I hate myself for all those times I want to be seen beautiful, as I feel like I then give in to stereotypical gender roles, which I’ve been opposed to for as long as I remember. I have an AFAB child, who’s as much fighting against all those roles society tries to force upon us as I would have been in their age. If I was born female, I’d shave my head, never wear dresses and never put on absolutely no makeup. Well, maybe eyeliner, and nailpolish of course. But you see those even on cis males these days.

Is this my personal problem, or are others struggling with this? I’d like to be seen as a woman, which I know I am inside this, as of now, male body (although a heavily feminine leaning non-binary might be more accurate description), but I feel that in the trans community there is the constant need to be cute and pretty. Many seem to agonize over it, and it makes me sad. They shouldn’t have to.

I know, I’m free to do just my own thing of course. So is everyone else – I definitely don’t want to judge anyone. People do what they’re happy and comfortable doing. But the fact that being transgender seems to actually uphold some very stereotypical and oldfashioned gender roles troubles me. Being beautiful can't be the #1 goal in being woman. Any thoughts?

I was a huge Sailor Moon fan in middle school. I could take or leave the anime, and would read the manga but didn't devour it. I was just big into the art. It was so unique and beautiful, and the clothes (so many having been lifted directly from runways) were to die for. So I can see why someone who was perhaps naive to the realities of women's clothing would think that would make a good model to base your wardrobe off of.

But another aspect I don't think either of us has mentioned is that those fashions were also very of their time period. Like you said, mini-skirts aplenty, and also giant shoulder pads and lots of pastels and big chunky socks and wacky layering. Still looks great in the cartoon though, and honestly like you said, a waifish enough Japanese gal could probably pull that stuff off with the appropriate styling.

It continues to absolutely blow my mind the way these troons manage to delude themselves about the most basic observable facts. Yet again, these lies about 'passing' and not being clocked have hit a bit too close to home to my own experiences. I'm a woman who in the current iteration of her professional career sometimes sustains facial injuries. Apparently, because I'm not getting hit with, "Damn bitch the fuck happened to you?" whenever I go out, I'm 'passing' as someone without a black eye or split lip/eyebrow. It's like they're so incapable of internal thought or monologuing that they can't imagine someone else holding their tongue to be polite?? Literal NPC behaviour if true. The whole thing is such a blatant denial of visible facts--especially when they post pics of themselves--that I cannot rectify in my head at all. Just living in an entirely parallel world.

So yeah I roll and/or spar with men multiple times a week. We're all pretty high performing athletes to say the least of it, but most of them do have more time under their belts (geddit?) than I do so they are plain better at the sport. That undeniably plays a role in my experience. Having said that, I've also fought with guys who are less skilled than me, and some really physically stronger like they're just gigantic dudes with 80lbs+ on me even in the offseason.

There are a lot of training partners that I can hold my own with and have a good back-and-forth of submissions and choking each other a few times per session. These men constantly remark at how strong I am, but if they get past my guard or get a good grip, it's so much more difficult to break that grip or their posture to shrimp out of there. I'd say a 50% further effort needed just to get them rolling around so I can even start to get out from under there. It is a full effort unlike with other skilled women with whom I can generally save some energy for a followup once I quickly get into the dogfight position then go on the offensive. There's probably 4-5 moves worst case needed to free myself with other women, and easily 8-10 to get into that position with men--if I can even manage it because I often can't make that an exit route to set me up for an offensive.

Any advantage I have over the men I roll with and can submit/choke disappears pretty quickly once the guy starts getting some height or weight on me(5" or so or ~30lbs). They're just bigger, stronger, your bones are denser and flex less; your punches hit harder, your kicks rock my entire body, you have a longer reach and you'd think it would make that easier to make space or create structure, but it somehow doesn't??? I remember when I was newer to the sport I was holding for a skilled kickboxer just doing some drills. Even from behind the strike shield, properly braced, I would literally feel my ribcage rattling around with each hit. That was fucking terrifying for me, even as a tomboy who has always roughhoused with the boys and managed to hold my own for the most part. Years on the terror is gone, but the sheer contrast in experience has not changed, even as my body has gotten used to taking the hits. Unheard of with the women I fight and train with. That rattling feeling just does not happen when holding for other strong, highly trained women. At least not like that. Even now with properly braced stance I'll lose my footing holding for men. Once I caught a white belt's kick--properly guarded mind--to the head and it almost put me to sleep. Good thing we need MRIs before we fight in competitions, but holy shit dude I'm retarded enough without your whitebelt behaviour killing more braincells. Another time I was literally doinked (not even hit) in the back of the head and it severed a nerve ending in my neck. I quite literally stood up into this guy's elbow and KO'd one of the nerves in my neck. Insane.

Last of this sperg is just I absolutely do not train anything involving checks (blocking kicks with your shin) without wear full on instep shin guards, idgaf if the idea is I make the dude hurt his leg more than mine I don't need that much calcification there. After checking a few kicks when I was new against men, I thought they'd knocked my patella or fibula out of place even when perfectly performed. Again, bashing shins with another woman hurts, but not the way it hurts with a man. I'd compare the difference in bone feeling to be probably like steel vs steel (female vs female) to steel vs granite wall (female vs male). With women, you can feel the energy distribution on your bones and the flex is different to a man's where you feel no flex. It's really hard to articulate how it feels like it's only my body absorbing the energy from both of us and getting shaken. Same feeling when catching a punch! It is just an overwhelming impact from most men when compared to other women--who really do fucking hurt!! A lot!! I'd rather catch an unguarded kick from a woman to the thigh than a man, because if I catch one from a guy, it can almost instantly charley horse my quad whether or not the muscle is fatigued.

tl;dr: The strength difference in men isn't just the sheer force behind the punch, but the feeling of the hit itself compared to getting punched by women. My current shiner did come from another woman, though so thats fun. I'm still yet to be hit with "damn bitch wtf happened to you!?" while out so I guess it isn't actually there and I identify as someone with clear skin

There are rules and equipment that try to keep serious injury from happening and anyone who thinks the men in these situations sparring with women aren't holding back, well, a have some ocean view property in Ohio to sell you.
