The right move would be to counter the narrative. Of course Nick cannot speak of anything he’s currently in legal trouble for, so talking about the drugs or even the child abuse is out of the question. But you know what the cops did claim about Nick that you can’t get prison time for? Having a dirty house! So let’s pull out the smartphone and give a house tour. As much as I think he's a reprehensible cunt, you cannot diagnose Nick with ASPD from your internet armchair. He has traits in line with a number of Cluster B disorders, but these things also overlap with many other issues - notably this includes run of the mill substance abuse disorder.

Nick bad, but I wouldn't jump to the conclusion of him being a clinical psychopath just yet.

Yeah I think it's a bit like with school shooters - it's not just about weapons. They're a symptom of an extremely sick society, there is a whole environment that enables the most sickening crime to occur.
Same for Nick, it's not that he's addicted. It's that he never allowed himself to get humbled, and through his unique set of circumstances - he had it very easy to reject any opportunity to feel the pain and learn from adversities. He's a 40 sth year old loser that never grew up.
So now he is so deluded, that a judge can tell him that the maximum sentence for his crime is 25 fucking years - and the bitch is still like - no no, it's not happening, everyone is wrong about me.

I highly doubt Good Lawgic would have been as understanding if 26gr of drugs were found in a dirty neglected home, where children were living if the person was a left wing youtuber or god forbid a Democrat politican. He would have grandstanded and comdemned that person.

So why should this case be different? It's fine to not throw your friend under the bus and just make some generic statement about how you pray for him and hope he will get better and sort himself out. That might be a weak statement, but it is way better than actively sweeping for him and trying to gaslight people into supporting him when Nick has done exactly zero to improve his position.

And yes, the world needs voices of sanity and yes you are allowed to fuck up once in a while. But that doesn't mean we should cover for absolute degenerates just because they said stuff we liked a couple of years ago.

For me, the breaking point for Nick was Dear John. His sheer glee at using what he was told in confidence by someone at their lowest point to hurt that person and people vaguely connected with them years after the fact really cemented that he wasn't just someone who kept making bad decisions and fucking up his own life and the life of his family, but someone who is fundamentally cruel and evil.
