This a legit question to my burger friends: why is storing your Sig Sauer under the bed a bad thing? I seem to recall many times many people bitching about the stupidity of gun safes, because in a home defense situation you want your firearm as soon as possible. Of course, there's the "the kids might blow your/their brains out" thing, and the loose ammunition, but then what is the proper way to store it in a way that wouldn't be an aggravating factor yet still be optimal for home defense?

It's only an issue (legally, in some states like Florida) if children have access to it. The idea is of a child getting ahold of your loaded (because you don't keep a flashlight without batteries), unattended firearms and shooting themselves, other people/children, you, your dog, your gila monster, etc.

There's a certain age (toddlers) where you can't really teach firearm safety, but once they're old enough to learn not to play with everything they get their hands on, you can teach them either a) don't touch (sub-optimal) or b) proper firearm handling (what every parent should do).

I'm of the idea that keeping your collection in a safe is fine for a variety of reasons, but always have your daily carry or something out and ready to grab in case of an unexpected visit from a future CEO or other radioactive melanoids from certain three-letter agencies.

We want to punish people who are selling/possessing drugs on the street with a gun on their person more than a person doing that without a gun, because the person with a gun can end up getting in shootouts and killing people (whether because of other druggies, drug dealers, psychosis, being out of your mind and doing something retarded, etc.). That's why it's an aggravating factor, a different charge, an enhancer, etc. depending on the jurisdiction and prosecutor.

You might say it's not fair that you can't have your gun in reach and illegal drugs in the immediate area because you have a right to own firearms that shouldn't be punished because of personal consumption of illegal drugs. Maybe that's true some of the time, like when an otherwise law-abiding guy has a pistol and a half-smoked joint in their ashtray. But that's where prosecutorial discretion comes into play. And since we're talking about a guy who's been mentally degenerating while he has access to guns and large amounts of psychosis-inducing drugs while around a bunch of children, maybe saying it's bad to store your rifle next to your drugs isn't incorrect.
