Walmart is fucking vicious in litigation. They'll do everything they can to fuck you up even if you're right. Jon is far from the first grifter to try to pull some legal bullshit over a fire or in-store slip and their army of lawyers is well-versed in defending against those shenanigans.I doubt Walmart will take responsibility for something that they couldn't have foreseen and was not instigated by them.
They've even been known to engage in malicious compliance when they lose in court. They rather famously canceled plans to open a brand new Supercenter -- mere weeks before its grand opening -- because the local employees successfully sued for the right to unionize. Technically speaking, Walmart complied with the court's order to recognize the union and not refuse to employ unionized workers. They simply had no positions to fill, as existing contracted staff (from elsewhere) who were already engaged in construction were still available to move merchandise and equipment back out again.
Not gonna lie, it was fucking hilarious when that newly-formed union, fresh off its legal victory over Walmart, sued the company again for closing the store and leaving town and learned the hard way that although you can force a company to allow unionization, you can't force it to operate a store at all anywhere your union can reach it.
