What's kind of embarrassing about fats is he's not a complete idiot; he sometimes has actual interesting ideas (or combinations of others' interesting ideas) - but he's completely incapable of writing it out in a fun and believable manner.
Many humor/satirical writers have had characters that are very obviously a "Plonald Flump"-style take off on a real person (Mad Magazine, anyone?) or have had characters with weird names caused by circumstances.
He just can't do much with them, because he's just not that good of a writer.
Lore only matters if you plan on making a game out of it, preferably a TTRPG since it will last longer.
Lorewanking (at a tolkien level, say) is important for consistency (the hairy pooper lady fucked this up a number of noticeable times, tolkien had a heart attack about a moon phase not lining up and even wrote it into the story), but isn't terribly important to the story (after all, tons of people enjoy star wars or LoTR without being absolute nerds about it and knowing all the details).
Good worldbuilding gives you depth, which can be the difference for the readers
if they want to go deeper - it's there. I've always thought that HP was kind of shallow in that it's fun, entertaining, but if you sit down with some other fans and delve into it, everything just starts falling apart. Kind of like how you can't really think too much about Hans from
Frozen, just enjoy pop song and snowman.
Games need good worldbuilding because there's just so much everywhere that you will interact with. WoW has something like six million words in its quests and dialogue (12x the LoTR)

a) and that was ten years ago. People loved the original because it had so much content (1.5m words, or 2x LoTR), and it was well world-built, and consistent, and fun. WoWorldbuilding has gone to shit and people don't care much about it anymore.
