Yes, one can make the argument that the U.K. has a million problems to deal with, so abolishing the monarchy is far down the list, and I'd generally agree with you. Except rich, out of touch, house pet royalty are a great symbol for the rich, out of touch, morally bankrupt oligarchy that are the reason that British living standards are declining. Brexit is over and done with now, so it can no longer distract Britain from its suffering. But now we have all this bullshit about the royal family to distract people from Britain's suffering. Now, everybody is going to be thinking about the eventual fate of the geriatric king who should have just renounced the throne prior to ever assuming it, considering his age, rather than the very real problems Britain is dealing with that won't get fixed because the elites are out of touch and the system is broken. Removing the monarchy isn't an exclusively socialist idea by any stretch of the imagination.
At least the political bandwidth would be taken up by something that actually matters. It doesn't matter which upper crust royal sits on the throne. Whatever form the British government takes post-monarchy would have to be a collaborative effort from parliament, with advice from the ministries and civil service, and would have almost certainly require a vote and buy in from the general public to get any support. Chances are, it wouldn't look too different from the current system. As I've said before, the U.K. is already basically a parliamentary republic in all but name, so most of the reforms would be about replacing the House of Lords, deciding whether or not it will be a purely parliamentary system or a presidential one of some kind, and what to do about monarch's remaining powers and responsibilities (such as who's going to be the new commander and chief of the military), while also formalizing the relationship between the courts and the rest of the new system.
