There were four parts prior to these four parts where he doesn’t get to say much, but at one point Judge Judy asks him a question and he replies “That’s irrelevant.” Let’s just say she lets him know in no uncertain terms how much his opinions matter in her courtroom.

Pat at least has enough self-awareness to realize he’s absolutely incapable of thinking on his feet or engaging impressively in any debate. That’s why he immediately blocks anyone who’s clearly his intellectual and communicative superior. He wouldn’t dare risk going on any show where he’d be expected to speak contemporaneously, let alone with a formidable adversary present.

Short stories used to be super popular. People would buy magazines that were collections of short stories and these short stories very often developed into novels. I think Sherlock Holmes is an example of this. They are not as popular in the entertainment sphere now but there's still a plethora of options for publication and competition.

Short stories are good for writers: they help with practice and often springboard into bigger projects.

In short, that's why Patrick thinks they're beneath him. Why would the great intellectual Patrick Tomlinson waste his talents writing short stories? He doesn't need practice. The prize money for that short story competition if $500? Patrick doesn't have time to even consider such a meager sum.
