AFAIK any abscess or cyst can, technically, tunnel, if left untreated long enough, simply due to them bursting, supposing they don't burst outward.

I suspect she was actually talking about having a lancing done by appointment in a GP’s treatment room, rather than an actual surgery with a surgeon and anaesthetist.

Having had one before, when my GP at the time offered to lance it straight away, it was such a relief, I just had him do it on the spot. Sure there was a risk it could return and require actual surgery, especially given it’s large size, but the relief from the pain was immediate. 30 years later and it’s thankfully never returned, but if it did/does there is no way in hell I wouldn’t get it treated for fear of needles. You can probably imagine those things hurt like the Devil.
