If Anthony could have been smart enough to pretend to be a normal human being we'd have a few more years of quality radio. Anthony for many years was very good about "skirting a line" but at some point he just said fuck it and tanked the show until he was finally let go for tweeting things that no sane person with any kind of job would tweet under their real name. Even if you aren't famous - if you went into your normie job and sent out an email that said "Black people are not humans" - you would 100% expect to be fired inside of 30 minutes.

IMO, O&A from when they lost free FM to Ant's firing is the best the show was since WNEW. Not a fan of the 2005/2006 era for some reason. The audio quality from that time period pisses me off as well, XM had some weird production thing where all the voices sound flat as shit on their 2004 broadcasts, I hate it.

Like I mentioned in a previous post, I doubt O&A would have lasted past 2017 just because there was a giant clamping down on non-PC content due to Trump's victory/Unite The Right-type stuff on top of SiriusXM wanting to cut corners wherever they could that wasn't Howard Stern, but just a few more years would have been great. Falcone was a late addition to the show but he was so good. The Lady Di Internship is iconic and it was just months before the firing. They were still doing good radio. If you've ever listened to the final O&A show, it's relaxed and they're all having fun, Sandy Kane shows up, etc. The idea that the show was "in decline" in terms of comedic quality is something I find to be just incorrect.

I don't get the hate, i have seen the Beige documentary and all and he has his flaws but i still find him funny when he is riffing off the "right" people. Can someone teach me to hate him as much as people in here? As a Swede i have no cultural connection to American radio but i found the Opie and Anthony show a couple years ago and it is perfect to listen to while trying to sleep. When they discuss movies and King Kong in general make me chuckle under my quilt.

I don't think it's hate it's the wasted potential. And his shows before almost dying, were barely listenable. 50% black people bad & 50% drunk shit talking.

Agree. Burr bugs me for some reason well before this shit with Ant. I don't blame the guy for wanting to separate himself from Cumia at all. It's something else about Burr that bugs me. I think O&A was on borrowed time and Anthony’s tweets gave them cover. SiriusXM only seems to accommodate Howard Stern. I get desperate emails from them to rejoin for a dollar a month. Satellite radio would probably collapse if rental car companies stopped including it in their vehicles, they’ve been hanging on by a thread these last several years. O&A was not enough to keep things profitable and had no leverage which is why Opie didn’t last much longer either.

I always got the impression that Sirius was looking for a way out after the merger because they thought that O&A was more headaches than they were worth. Not only because of the history of on-air controversies, but also just because of the never-ending amount of HR nightmares they had to deal with behind the scenes. You look back on the old shows, you realize just how much was going on with the other staff members involving their own drama. You had numerous stuff happen with Danny, Erock had an incident with an NDA, interns alleging abuse. Other older interns blamed the show for them not getting work, leading to newer interns applying to Sirius not wanting to work under O&A.

It always stood out to me that no matter how much they tried, the radio show could not function like a normal one. Other radio shows probably do have behind the scenes stories, but with O&A it was like a bunch of teenage girls hating one another. Every staff member was fighting with one another and there was constant drama. O&A couldn't even pick normal people to manage their show for them.

Because he is a phony. The only way to survive in comedy these days is to remove any edge from your material except for approved targets. Since he is an approved target (white guy) he has to tone down his content even further.

In a way, Jim Norton is the most successful of the original O&A trio. If anything, Jim Norton was the second true star of O&A. Quickly surpassing the Opie in popularity among listeners. I get that some callers have shit takes and should get run for it, but this was just uncalled for. There's a difference between goofing on someone for being dumb and just being mean for the sake of being mean.

I didn't start listening to O&A until after the show was over (on Youtube) and while what you're saying is true, he definitely started to go from generally being funny about it to actually seething. Not that I have a problem with racist stuff or anything, but actually seething isn't really funny, especially when it's mostly the same shit over and over. Part of that too with him is that he didn't really get strong pushback on that stuff after Patrice died which helped him spiral.

I don't even know if going the Howard route could have saved them. For as many controversies as Howard has had during his career, I felt he was better at building public support and developing friendships in higher places.

O&A really had a terrible reputation back then and have an even worse one now. No matter where you go, you'll be shocked at just how reviled they are when their name comes up anywhere that doesn't have die hard fans of the show available to talk about it.

I think the problem people have with him and this subject is his unhealthy obsession with it. No one cared about the OJ blackface stuff partially due to it being a different time but also because he was approaching that whole story with genuine humor. People want to hear him make jokes. They don't want him to be attempting to be a serious pundit citing crime statistics and screaming at callers.

The problem is also that he is about as poor of a representative as one can be. He is just as trashy as any black from any hood in this country. He's violent, he's an addict, he spends his money the second he earns it on stupid stuff.

And I've said this before: I think a lot of Anthony's issues with race stem from the fact that he knows he is of more mixed-race ancestry, and that deeply bothers him.

They didn't want a way out (they could just not offer contracts) but they wanted O&A to fall in line with the program - that O&A were going to essentially be just another high profile radio show in the portfolio. They'd get the good guests, get some promos, do some live events, etc - but that was it. Opie always wanted to push it forward and really wanted to compete with Stern with SXM was never going to allow - doubly so with how much stock they must have given Stern to sign on. Opie clearly had a strategy as well that XM was slightly warm to but SXM was gave up on.

Sadly for Opie these things just never worked out - the offsite message boards (aka Wackback, the subreddit) were always more trouble then they were worth. The intern drama always caused problems. The comedy tour got a ton of negative press for how shitty the crowds were. Some of the deliberate sabotaging of interviews caused some people to more prominent people to pass on them.

Opie wanted the O&A channel on SXM to be more than the O&A channel. He wanted Ron and Fez on the channel, he wanted Patrice to do his own show (Black Philip), he wanted Bill Burr, Louis CK, etc - he wanted a packed out channel that XM just didn't want to invest in - which if they did, they might still be successful today.

SXM just wanted O&A to do O&A things, do the show, get a few mil, and shut the fuck up (also do not talk to Stern in the elevator like you are friends).

And I must be tone-deaf or whatever the vocal equivalent of face-blindedness is, because I cannot pick out which voice is Ant's.

Jimmy has the New Yawk accent, and Opie has the gruff baritone voice, so I should be able to tell Anthony's by process of elimination. But for some reason, Ant's voice sounds similar to either of those to me at any given moment. I can only pick him out if he's called out by name, or if he's doing an impression.
