As far as BTK goes, Raders wife supposedly caught him crossdressing and freaked out and told him she'd take the kid and divorce him if she caught him again.
His daughters book is quite good.
She said there's a lot of things that looking back add up that she didn't think of at the time.

He was married twice. His first wife divorced him before the murdering started, and his second wife noticed him doing really suspicious shit and divorced him before he was caught, but things really amped up after she left him.

Sorry I should have clarified, he wasn't married at the time he was sinking dead people under the crawlspace.
His first wife divorced him after the sodomy charge in Ohio, and the second like you said.
I think like a lot of gay dudes at the time he was using them as his "beards."
I don't think they were around for the time he was actively killing, most of his murders occurred over a 5 year period, which when you think he killed 33 people is really quite a busy guy.

Gacy may have been gay, but he was married twice; married and divorced his first wife by whom he had 2 children in the 60's, and then married again in the 70's when he started committing the murders. His second wife and stepchildren were living in the same house as a serial killer for years and years.

Bundy wasn't married, but he had a cohabiting girlfriend named Liz Kloepfer for much of his career as the world's most notorious serial killer.
